Oncoming Storms 109.3. Writing

May 31, 2010 18:23

Write about a mundane aspect of your character's life - something that would never usually be shown because it's an ordinary, boring part of life.

You comb your dripping hair untangling bottom sections and then gradually moving upwards until you can run the wide toothed comb through from root to tip in long even strokes. Your hair is halfway down your back when it is like this and unconsciously you count each stroke on your way to one hundred. Once your mum did this, and you think her even now, as you work a bit of product into the roots and work your way to the ends.

Your mum, whose hair had never curled leaving her at a loss as to how to manage yours.

Already the curls are starting to form and you tip your head to one side twisting each lock around your finger to give it definition, scrunching as you go to break the long damp shank into manageable sections. You use a strip of microfiber toweling to wick the moisture away, alternating between the cloth and your fingers to scrunch and twist.

You use a diffuser and drench each section with heat until it's dry enough to hold its shape, working body into each section, you finish it with a bit of spray - firm hold - never know when the end of the universe will put you through your paces. You pull it back with an elastic loop, millennia later and the human race hasn't found anything that works better, and smooth the curls into a cohesive whole.
