I think that was the intention, and they didn't totally miss the mark. There was, however, a distinct lack of the kinds of moments that USED to give us a peek into the House psyche; instead we got the romantic relationships that never quite gave us the level of insight that we've gotten in the past.
The writers used to show us these absolutely incredible quiet moments of introspection where we got a glimpse of how House was feeling or what he was thinking. They used to use the clinic patients as catalysts for a change in House's beliefs or glimpses into the reasons for his behavior as well, but the clinic all but disappeared this year. One Day, One Room was one of my favorite episodes because we learned so much about House through his patient. I loved seeing him with children because he was so incredibly gentle and understanding with them. Who can forget Georgia, the elderly woman with syphilis? I loved his interaction with her; it made me wonder if she somehow reminded him of his mother or another female figure in his life. The only time I saw anything like this in season 5 was in Both Sides Now with the patient played by Carl Reiner.
Anyways, I totally understand what you are saying. Don't misunderstand me, the last eight or so episodes this season totally blew me away, and I can still get teary eyed just thinking about the finale and watching poor House walk up that driveway alone. That was one seriously powerful episode.
And I am really looking forward to season 6, but I'll be totally honest when I say that this Huddy storyline needs to be resolved or it needs to go away. It is disappointing when I hear that they are going to drag it out even more. The "thing" between House and Cuddy was back and forth all season, with neither of them ever being on the same page with the other one. Some of the episodes dealing with this were absolutely horrible (Let Them Eat Cake,The Greater Good) and just painful to watch. Enough is enough. Sexual tension is a good thing, but good things can go very bad when people don't know the meaning of "enough is enough." Resolution, one way or the other, is all a lot of fans are asking for.
The POV that I try to see this from is not the million or so hardcore fans that belong to the fandom; it's the 12 million other people that tune in every week that don't ship anyone. Many of them aren't watching the show any more because of how much it has changed. The fact is that the ratings have declined dramatically this season. There is a reason for that, and it would be nice if people in the fandom could just step outside it for a moment to see what's going on in the big, wide world. Because another fact that people need to understand is that it's those 12 million that are keeping the show on the air. It's not us, believe me. We are but a mere drop in the bucket compared to the volume of people tuning in each week. (House may be the most popular show in the world, but the world has no bearing whatsoever on the ratings and, therefore, whether the show stays on the air.)
On top of that, David Shore has been pandering to the Huddy shippers so much lately that it is frankly quite disturbing. They are but a small (but extremely vocal) minority of the 13 million that tune in every week, and I think he's treading on dangerous ground when he starts apologizing to them and using the smooshy ship names. First off, it offends other ships that have just as much invested in the show, and it sets a dangerous precedent. Releasing a video just for the House/Cuddy shippers is unheard of, and the amount of backlash he's had to endure for betraying, lying to, mistreating, (their words, not mine) and just plain pissing them off is his own fault.
I just want to get back to basics with this show. I'll never, ever stop watching House (even if sometimes I get really pissed off and threaten to) as long as Hugh is on it, but there have been some amazing things that have been sacrificed to accomodate LE (DS has said so) and her quest for a House/Cuddy relationship, and I want them back.
House/Cuddy video? What? Tell me it isn't so. Then tell me where it is, because I'm apparently a masochist.
I kinda wish RSL or Hugh were more vocal about this. Not that I'm blaming them, they're doing what they're supposed to. They act, and they let the writers write. But when there's one person who isn't doing that, it gets very frustrating, watching the people who DESERVE a say not get one because someone who doesn't is throwing fits. Hugh has said he's not particularly interested in Huddy, and I seem to recall something about being cool with H/W, but since he's not making a RIDICULOUSLY HUGE deal about it, they're placating LE instead. Especially since Hugh's been credited as an EXECUTIVE PRODUCER.
Gah, I hate it when drama queens get what they want, just because no one wants to deal with them.
OMG, you never saw the Huddy video put out by Fox a couple of weeks before the finale??? It was NAUSEATING. The video (on the official Fox House site), started out by saying (I shit you not) "HUDDY FANS" and then said "that was then" and showed the first kiss, then said "this is now" and showed the hallucination kiss from the finale (only it was an extended version and had more in it than the actual scene that ended up in the episode).
It was f-ing ridiculous. You may be able to find it in the House_Cuddy comm. I couldn't find it at Fox.
This was the reason all the Huddies got their panties in a bunch and DS recently apologized for.
