Yet another reason to adore Hugh Laurie (and Emma Thompson)

Jan 15, 2009 10:08

This is from an article in the "Globe and Mail" Arts section in which Emma Thompson discusses "her personal struggle over whether to attend the glitzy Golden Globes in the midst of a recession":

"Last night, [House's] Hugh Laurie and I were discussing whether it was appropriate to have these glitzy, glammy things when people are losing their jobs. I wonder if it would better to suggest to the [Hollywood] Foreign Press [Association] that they postpone nights like this and give the money instead to people who could really use it," the 49-year-old muses. "The industry would probably say we [have to produce shows like this] because we have our own industry we have to support. And I suppose as another aspect of the recession, you sometimes need the frivolous to lift your spirits a bit.

"But when I was reading The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times this morning, I did pick up - from the journalists - a weary tone, suggesting it's difficult for them to witness this kind of extravagance. I have sympathy for both sides of the argument."

Just the fact that these two wonderful people were even thinking about this - never mind actually discussing it - makes me all warm and fuzzy. It's nice to know that there are people in Hollywood that are not so self-absorbed and financially insulated that they forget that a LOT of people are suffering right now.
