He follows Cal out the door, hands in his pockets and every sense on alert.

After all the excitement with Grahame, staking his father is almost anticlimactic. Cal wasn't wrong about no one interfering - Heather doesn't move from the armchair she's occupying, flipping idly through a magazine while she digests the evening's kill, and the others take their cues from her. It's like Cal and Reed aren't even in the room. Once he's done, he tells Heather thanks, but he's moving on, and she says yeah, she kinda figured.

Next stop is his former home, to execute an idea he's had in mind for a while. Sherlock's invitation has yet to be revoked, which proves handy in convincing Violet to come outside for a little chat. They make a deal: Cal will disappear from Sunnydale until after she dies at the very minimum, and she will set up a bank account and some paperwork to make Cal's movement in unlife a little easier for the next few decades or so. She's glad enough to go along, especially when he tells her that Dad isn't a problem anymore either, and it was him, not Cal, who wanted her dead.

It takes an extra day or two, but once everything is settled, he and Sherlock will be able to make the trip to New York a lot more comfortably than they would otherwise.

Intimidating Violet Chandler was no difficult task with her security force in tatters, but Sherlock still enjoyed it. And he is definitely enjoying the results. Now they have a car of their very own, not even stolen-he left the keys to Violet's on her bedside table, but the vehicle itself is still parked at the Lalonde place.

Add to that a series of road maps, a gallon jug of decent whiskey, a tin of loose-leaf Earl Grey, sufficient changes of clothing for a week or so, and several yards of blackout curtain in case of emergencies, and Sherlock thinks they are just about ready to drive across the country.

Cal has never been on a road trip before. Frankly, he'd rather fly, but that's out of the question. Even a flight with vampire-friendly timing is still too public right now, and it will only get worse after news of his tragic death starts making headlines in a couple days. After they're done in New York, Cal will probably have to leave the country if he wants to spend any time near anything resembling civilization in the next five years.

For now, though: road trip. A few days in a car is still the best option they have.

"I'll take us out of California," he says cheerfully as they pull out of the long driveway half an hour after sunset. "I have the roads memorized."

"Okay."

Cal has no problem with this. He'll get to do his share of driving. They may not get tired like human drivers do, but they will get bored.

"Past the border, however, we will have to rely on our maps. If all goes well I expect we can make it in five nights, hopefully without killing each other from sheer boredom first."

"If I get too wound up," Cal promises, "I'll try to find a stoner to drink from."

It would calm him down for a while.

"Oh, so it does work that way? Good to know."

"Yeah," Cal says. "Heather said she used to raid opium dens a lot like a hundred years ago. Said it was even better than smoking the real thing."

"In that case, remind me to track down a cocaine addict sometime."

This Cal doesn't know the reference, but he says obligingly,

"Bet there are plenty of those in New York."

"Holmes in the books had a fondness for cocaine," he explains. "Helped while away the dull hours between cases. It was legal in that century."

"Oh."

Cal eyes him thoughtfully.

"We could get you a pipe and a weird hat, too," he suggests.

He laughs.

"I think I'll skip the hat. Might try the pipe, though. The other Cal has been planning to give me his since he moved on to smoking cigarettes."

Cal makes a face.

"Cigarettes?" They're okay sometimes, but he's never seen the appeal in a fulltime habit.

"Well, he was running the household at that point. Less opportunity to indulge in anything more relaxing."
