[creative muses] Feb. Prompt: 001. What's your comfort food?

Feb 17, 2007 10:11

I can't decide.

I mean, you'd think it'd be easy, considering how clever the Hogwarts house-elves are with meals. They've always made loads of different things for supper, and all a student needs to do is choose from these massive trays piled high with food. I can't recall ever having a favourite meal. They're all so good. You can tell the elves take loads of pride in their work. It rubs off on the quality of the meals.

Oh, wait. I think I remember something I miss eating, something that reminds me of home. Bacon sandwiches. On stale white bread. Uncle Algie makes these all the time. He slavers butter on the bread and then stacks a few slices of smoked back bacon between them. Tops the whole thing off with tomato ketchup, or sometimes he uses the brown pasty Muggle stuff that comes in jars. 'Marmite', I think?

It's disgusting, actually. He always burns the bacon so the kitchen smells awful, and they can't be healthiest things in the world. Not with the bread sopping up all that grease and butter. But he can't get enough of them, and always shares them with me when he visits. That reminds me of home, and nothing the house-elves can cook will even come close. I think they'd be mortified beyond belief if they ever tried the recipe. It really doesn't look edible.

It doesn't keep very well, either, not even with packing and preserving charms. Uncle Algie'd tried once, of course. Owled a stack of them to me at Hogwarts. When the parcel arrived, I tried one out and they tasted off. Suppose it's got to be made at home else it's not the same.

Brilliant. Now I'm craving them again.
