protective structures of the eye
- tear ducts (lacrimal)
- eyelids
- fatty deposits
- eyelashes
- bony orbits
conjuctiva
- transparent lining of the eyelid (epitheial)
- purpose is to protect the outer surface of the eye
sclera
- "The white" of the eye, opaque
- made of non-elastic, tough, fibrous tissue
cornea
- involved with the refraction of light as it enters the eye
- transparent front part of sclera
choroid
- rich in blood vessels
- heavily pigmented w/ dark melanin, which prevents reflection of light inside the eye
retina
- Light sensitive surface which contains two types of photo receptor cells: rods (dim, black and white vision) and cones (colour vision)
- blind spot has no light sensitive cells. is where the nerve fibres leave to join the optic nerve.
Fovea
- part of retina that produces most acute vision
- densely populated w/ cones
- fewer blood bessels and neurons covering the sensory cells
Optic nerve
- relays information in the form of nerve impulses from the eye to the brain
Aqueous humour
- responsible for refraction of light rays
Lens
- responsible for sharpest vision
- made of transparent epithelial cells
