i empathise very much with Charlie Gordon in Daniel Keyes' Flowers for Algernon.
well of course, the extent isn't as drastic. but i can definitely relate to the feeling of helplessness, acute mental faculties slipping away. slowly, so slowly. and the worst thing is experiencing the decline from greatness.
