A Comedy of Errors

Jun 16, 2009 23:56

10:00 am Wake up, brush teeth, growl at bathroom scale, make SlimFast shake

10:15 am Wake up Ethan, change diaper, realize his shoes are missing

10:17 am Call Kevin, inform him that we won't be making our 11 lunch appointment unless I can find Ethan's shoes, and inquire as to where he put them when he took them off on Sunday

10:18 am Give up on husband who suggests I take the kid to lunch with no shoes, scrounge up some shoes that *mostly* fit and cram them on his feet

10:25 am Realize I'm nearly running late, scramble Colin into his clothes and carseat, pack diaper bag, hustle both kids to car

10:30 am Remember Ethan's carseat was inundated with banana vomit on Sunday afternoon and was then disassembled and cleaned....and left disassembled to dry in the back yard.

10:31 am Curse sudden downpour

10:35 am Call Kevin again to tell him we won't be making it to lunch at all because of a lack of car seat, reschedule for tomorrow

10:40 am Realize I don't have a key to the (locked) front door as we have recently changed the doorknob, decide to use garage door opener even though garage is nearly impassible with gifted (read: "here, take the crap we don't want anymore") furniture from my in-laws

10:41 am Discover battery in car's garage door opener is dead, call husband again to beg for mercy

11:15 am Husband arrives with coworker, lunch, and house key. My hero.

I thought my ridiculous day was over, but that was a lie. Dog peed on the carpet twice, I think she might have a UTI. So we'll be visiting the vet this week (somehow...no clue how that's gonna happen with both kids, but I'll figure it out). Dinner with Kev's folks, which went shockingly well in spite of Judy cleaning the dining room table (that I had just cleaned. sigh.) and leaving a container of crackers out for Ethan to crush up all over the freshly shampooed living room carpet. So Kevin and I sat down on the couch to watch the news after dinner, and the boys snuggled up between us. Kevin got up to check email etc. on the computer in the spare room and Ethan started playing the "jump as high as I can and fling myself backwards" game. It was pretty adorable, and really fun for him, until he turned to face away from me and flung himself right onto the side of nursing Colin's head. Colin woke up and screamed himself red in the face, Ethan started crying and kissing Colin, and I called my dad for advice. Dad's in Sacramento right now, so that's super helpful right? I talked to dad and decided I wasn't being crazy and called the hospital's pediatric RN line. By then Colin had calmed down and was holding his head up and looking around fairly alertly for a newborn, so I was much less worried. The nurse suggested I take him to the ER to get checked out, but after our last trip to the ER (wherein Colin was unnecessarily catheterized not once but twice by nurses who were ignoring the doctor's orders) we decided to call the doctor in the morning for an appointment and just watch him for signs of injury tonight. He's now sleeping soundly, well-fed and warm, in bed next to me. I haven't seen anything scary yet, but it's hard to separate signs of head injury from normal newborn stuff. Things like lethargy, vomiting, and eye-rolling are kinda par for the course with a 3-week old. I really do believe he's fine and will continue to be fine, but I can't help but worry. It's a mom thing; some of you would understand. ;)

And now I'm going to play Sims and hope tomorrow will go better.
