Last night,Daskolos and I went to the Wings Awards banquet. It was fun, for the most part. This year's ceremony ran about 80% smoother than last year's; so everything moved at a good clip. The speeches weren't over-indulgent and the presenters didn't feel like they had to preach to the audience this time. All in all, much better.
Jason Morgan, fellow troll, in conjunction with Tom Morris, won the Wings Award for Best Special Effects for their work in The Hobbit. That was extremely cool.
Christie McCleary, unfortunately, did not win Best Actress in a Singing Role for her incredible performance in Ragtime, but Ragtime itself won Best Artistic Direction for a Show with Music and Best Production for a Show with Music as well as a few other awards, all of which were much deserved. It was a beautifully done show.
The Best Actor in a Non-Singing Role nominees were all really good: George Kobler for the part of Petruchio in RT's production of Taming of the Shrew; Phil Parker as George Milton in Of Mice & Men; Gary Knight for his work in The Lion in Winter. I am pleased to announce, for those of you wondering, that I won for my portrayal of Lennie Small in Of Mice and Men. That was pretty flattering, I can assure you. What was even better, however, was that, at the end of the night, Martha Humphrey, the Wings Awards Director, told me that I had, by far, the highest score ever in the history of the Wings Awards: a 97 out of 100. That was pretty validating news to hear. I'm glad it turned out that way - I've wanted to play Lennie ever since Damon tricked me into getting involved in theatre; I'm glad that the way I played him rang true with those watching. Thank you, Movholic, for letting me break your neck at every performance!
Well, enough self-congratulation; I'd better get some work done today.
