2013 was a wonderful year for music. Not only did I discover new artists, I got so many new songs from old standbys. And Spotify was by far my greatest discovery -- it made listening to and organizing my music so much easier. Underneath the read more, you will find 40 of my favorite songs, separated into heavy rotation and runners-up. Feel free to read my notes on each song if you're interested. Hope you enjoy, and maybe find something new to listen to in your 2014!

Song: "Supersymmetry"
Artist: Arcade Fire
Album: Reflektor (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: Yeah, yeah, this is in the Her trailer. I often get half of my music from random commercials, movies, and TV. But this song gives me serious nostalgia pangs. Have you ever listened to something and it just evokes this feeling from the past that you can't quite place? This song does this for me. I can't even explain it.
/2
Song: "Symptoms"
Artist: Atlas Genius
Album: When It Was Now (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: Arguably, When It Was Now by Atlas Genius was probably my most-listened-to album of 2013. It's seriously great. And after their song "Trojans" (which basically started my obsession), "Symptoms" pushed my love for Atlas Genius over the edge.
/3
Song: "Waiting Game"
Artist: Banks
Album: LONDON (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: CASE IN POINT. This is from that Victoria Secret Christmas commercial, lol. But I love it.
/4
Song: "In a Big Country"
Artist: Big Country
Album: The Crossing (1983)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: This was covered by American Authors on The Carrie Diaries (shameless love for that show, btw). I wasn't able to find their version -- I didn't even realize they were covering a song at the time -- but the original sated me anyway. The lyrics are fantastic. "COME UP SCREAMING!" "STAY ALIVE!"
/5
Song: "Kangaroo Court"
Artist: Capital Cities
Album: In a Tidal Wave of Mystery (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: Catchy as crap. I heard "Safe and Sound" first, but I eventually got pretty tired of the song. The night I went to see Catching Fire, this played at the restaurant I went to eat in after. I don't know if I now associate the song with Catching Fire (which I obsessed over after I first saw it), and if that's why I love it so much...? Either way, it's still great.
/6
Song: "Miracle Mile"
Artist: Cold War Kids
Album: Dear Miss Lonelyhearts (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: Just a great song. "I feel the air upon my face / Forget the mess I'm in / Hold me again, don't count mistakes / I lost track of them" "I was in the mud, I was in the dirt / Went underground and I found what I was worth"
/7
Song: "Atlas"
Artist: Coldplay
Album: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Soundtrack (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: I mean, yes, Catching Fire-related, but I am a Coldplay stan for life. I don't even know if they're going to have a better song than this on the Mockingjay soundtrack. And the music video... the music video is worth a look.
/8
Song: "Come On Eileen"
Artist: Dexys Midnight Runners
Album: Too Rye Ay (1982)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: I don't even know why I wasn't more obsessed with this song when I first heard it in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, but when I watched the movie again this year, this song made a comeback. This is a random song I'm sure I'd heard before as a kid, but I never knew the band... so there again, I think there's a bit of a nostalgia thing happening for me.
/9
Song: "Currents"
Artist: Eisley
Album: Currents (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: All I have to say is... damn, this band is super underrated. This song was the first single off their new album this year and jfc is it good. Atmospheric and perfect for when you're feeling sort of moody -- it won't pick you up, it will just lament with you.
/10
Song: "Out of My League"
Artist: Fitz and the Tantrums
Album: More Than Just a Dream (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: I have this thing with this band where I'll listen to a single of theirs until I completely wear it out and can't hear the song again for a really long time (see: "MoneyGrabber"). I've been listening to "Out of My League" for months now and it's still as fresh as the first time I heard it.
/11
Song: "Shot At the Night"
Artist: The Killers
Album: Shot At the Night - Single (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: The Killers aren't entirely my cup of tea anymore -- I was really hooked on them initially when their first album was released (I mean, damn, that album was catchy), but since then, I haven't found a song that stuck with me. "Shot At the Night," however, just... something about it grabbed me. I don't know if it's the lyrics ("Give me a moment, some kind of mysterious") combined with the music video (Max Minghella take me away from my day job any day of the week), or just something in the music? The lyrics truly do speak to me, and I think their meaning stand out in the video.
/12
Song: "Heavy Feet"
Artist: Local Natives
Album: Hummingbird (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: You guys. Seriously. This song, though. Local Natives had me a couple years ago with their song "Airplanes" (which, btw, still makes me tear up), so I'm happy they came back this year and were still completely on their game.
/13
Song: "Flowers in Your Hair"
Artist: The Lumineers
Album: The Lumineers (2012)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: I was in love with their first single "Ho Hey" when I originally heard it on Hart of Dixie, but I never took the time to listen to their album in full when it was eventually released. This song is just so warm and it makes me want to dance and run through a field on a summer night.
/14
Song: "I Know Places"
Artist: Lykke Li
Album: Wounded Rhymes (2010)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: Just plug in your earphones, fall back on your bed in the dark, and close your eyes...
/15
Song: "Head On (Hold on to Your Heart)"
Artist: Man Man
Album: On Oni Pond (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: I can't even say how much this song picked me up when I was in a rotten mood.
/16
Song: "Who Are You, Really?"
Artist: Mikky Ekko
Album: Reds (2010)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: Thanks, True Blood. This song was perhaps a little overused in various TV shows this year, so I apologize if you're sick of it... BUT I'M NOT! :)
/17
Song: "Ain't It Fun"
Artist: Paramore
Album: Paramore (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: And the title for my second most-listened-to album belongs to PARAMORRRRE. Honestly, I wasn't a super big fan of Brand New Eyes, and my love for Paramore kind of lost its sheen over the years after that album was released. Who would have known what losing two band members would do for their creativity? I think their newest album is up for debate amongst fans on its greatness, but I fucking loved it. It was so refreshing and vibrant -- everything about it! Hayley's hair!!! JESUS!!! -- and it made me love Paramore again. I missed this band. And this song is just super fun to sing and dance around to.
/18
Song: "Entertainment"
Artist: Phoenix
Album: Bankrupt! (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: THIS MUSIC VIDEO MAKES ME SO HAPPY.
/19
Song: "A Tattered Line of String"
Artist: The Postal Service
Album: Give Up Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: Sadly, I almost forgot about this song. Much like Coldplay, I will ALWAYS stan Death Cab for Cutie and anything Ben Gibbard puts his name to. When The Postal Service released a new song with their re-release of Give Up, I basically couldn't shut up about it for a week.
/20
Song: "Let Go"
Artist: RAC ft. Kele and MNDR
Album: Let Go - EP (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: I can't even tell you guys how many times I listened to this song and I still haven't gotten tired of it. Kele's voice is perfect. And I don't know what twisted part of me enjoys the music video so much (especially 3:10, dude's face is beautiful), but it does and I'm just going to embrace it.
/21
Song: "Priscilla"
Artist: Sea Wolf
Album: Old World Romance (2012)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: I am ashamed to admit that for how much I tout Sea Wolf as a brilliant, horribly unrecognized band, I never got around to fully immersing myself in their latest album (I mean, I loved "Kasper," but that was probably the only song I listened to off it). Boy, was I dumb. This entire album is beautiful and deserves a listen if you get a chance. I listened to "Priscilla" A LOT this fall.
/22
Song: "Elastic Heart"
Artist: Sia ft. The Weeknd and Diplo
Album: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Soundtrack (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: Catching Fire-related again, but IT'S SO DANCE-Y.
/23
Song: "Bigger Than Us"
Artist: White Lies
Album: Ritual (2010)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: Okay, so in 2010, I unfortunately never got around to finishing my favorites playlist... had I done so, I would have plugged the crap out of this damn band because I easily wore out both To Lose My Life and Ritual after discovering their song "Death". Since I've recently started listening to them again this past year, I felt like I couldn't let the chance pass me by to include White Lies on this year's list. This song is just as epic as "Death" (especially once it hits that DAMN CHORUS) -- which I feel is probably their most well-known song -- and the music video is also worth a watch (it's one of my favorites, and kid can act).
/24
Song: "Run Boy Run"
Artist: Woodkid
Album: The Golden Age (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: Another overused song, but I don't even care. If you haven't heard this song, go. Go. Gooooo. It is epic and beautiful and everything you could possibly want in a song.
/25
Song: "Sacrilege"
Artist: Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Album: Mosquito (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: It could just be me, but I didn't hear this song a lot this year, which was kind of a shame.

/1
Song: "Pompeii"
Artist: Bastille
Album: Bad Blood (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: I'll be surprised if you haven't heard this song yet. I was pretty obsessed when I first heard it, like the rest of the world, and it got some HEAVY ROTATION from me on Spotify. I still enjoy it when I hear it randomly on the radio, etc., but it needs to be retired from my playlist for a bit.
/2
Song: "Lights Out, Words Gone"
Artist: Bombay Bicycle Club
Album: A Different Kind of Fix (2011)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: Honestly, I haven't grown that tired of this song, but I was trying to limit my main playlist to songs I didn't listen to last year as well. This song really is wonderful. If you need to relax, or if you're feeling a little claustrophobic from life's anxieties, it always mellows me out.
/3
Song: "Lonely Boy"
Artist: The Black Keys
Album: El Camino (2011)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: Again, not tired of this song -- I kind of rediscovered it when the movie Warm Bodies used it in its trailer this year. I've actually been really into it all year. The music video's kind of awesome, too.
/4
Song: "Hurricane"
Artist: Bridgit Mendler
Album: Hello My Name Is... (2012)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: I don't even know. This song is just so fucking catchy. But besides that, I find Bridgit Mendler one of the only live-action Disney stars that is completely annoyance-free? I think she's adorable, and I love her voice. I could totally see her having a great career if she amps it up on her next album. This should probably be on my main playlist... I'm not ashamed to admit I listened to this song A LOT.
/5
Song: "Sweet Nothing"
Artist: Calvin Harris ft. Florence Welch
Album: 18 Months (2012)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: Since I don't listen to the radio very much, I guess I missed how popular this song was? I only just got into it this year. It's a bit overplayed for me now, but damn, Florence is the best.
/6
Song: "The Mother We Share"
Artist: CHVRCHES
Album: The Bones of What You Believe (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: I was UTTERLY OBSESSED with this song when I first heard it. While I still enjoy it, I played it too much, lol, and it's unfortunately lost its fresh luster.
/7
Song: "Doin' It Right"
Artist: Daft Punk ft. Panda Bear
Album: Random Access Memories (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: I have to be ~unique~ and include this song over "Get Lucky," though I still really love that song. Again, I've overplayed it by this point, but I quite enjoyed the song over "Get Lucky" for its weirdness. "If you lose your way tonight / That's how you know the magic's right"
/8
Song: "From Nowhere"
Artist: Dan Croll
Album: From Nowhere - EP (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: YET ANOTHER OVERPLAY. But PLEASE treat your ears if you've never heard this because it is fantastic!
/9
Song: "Give Me Love"
Artist: Ed Sheeran
Album: + (2011)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: Yeah, I jumped on the Ed bandwagon a little late with this one, but damn if this song/music video isn't the saddest thing I've ever heard/seen. Not necessarily an over-listen, but it's also a little older compared to some of the songs on my main playlist. Honestly, I'm not sure I enjoy any of Ed's other songs, but this one just hits me in the feels. He has a gorgeous voice. That break-down toward the end with Ed's "LOVE ME"s KILLLLLLL MEEEE.
/10
Song: "Radioactive"
Artist: Imagine Dragons
Album: Night Visions (2012)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: I feel like I don't even need to say anything, lol. BUT I WANTED SO MUCH MORE FOR THIS MUSIC VIDEO.
/11
Song: "San Francisco"
Artist: The Mowgli's
Album: Waiting for the Dawn (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: Overplayed, but still lovely and happy.
/12
Song: "Girls Like You"
Artist: The Naked and Famous
Album: Passive Me, Aggressive You (2011)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: At this point, I play this song A LOT still. Sometimes I want to skip it when it comes on, but once I get into it, it becomes impossible. It's so much fun to dance and let loose to. Included on this list merely because it's older.
/13
Song: "Harlem"
Artist: New Politics
Album: A Bad Girl in Harlem (2012)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: Overplayed again, but this was totally my summer/driving with the windows down song. Kind of love the music video (the lead singer can get it) because it was what I was expecting, but also not?
/14
Song: "Dots and Dashes (Enough Already)"
Artist: Silversun Pickups
Album: Neck of the Woods (2012)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: Not overplayed, but I HAVE TO LIST THIS SONG. I just feel like this band needs more recognition! They're so legitimately good! It's on this list because their latest album has been on heavy rotation for me since last year, but this song was the newest single from it this year and I'm including it BECAUSE. Dat chorus~
/15
Song: "Wild"
Artist: Royal Teeth
Album: Glow (2013)
Listen:
YouTubeNotes: Overplayed, but this song is magic if you're listening to it for the first time. I also love the music video and HARRY POTTER.
