"What he actually is, is a fuck up. He fucks up, falls flat on his face, picks himself up, fucks up some more, tries again, fucks up even worse, and then at some point, finally, finally, he gets it right.
And when Spike gets it right, what we have, gentle viewers, is effulgence."
THIS.
I thought I was insane for a while, that I could care so much about a fictional character. Nothing insightful to say, just adding my voice to the Spike-love :)
congrats on finishing your exams! that must be a relief.
ALSO: i agree with every single word in this entry. i loved spike from his very first appearance and just kept loving him more and more as the series progressed. i can't imagine the show without him.
I think as a female, I’m expected to say some stuff about cheekbones too, but really, my initial reaction to Spike was more of the fanboyish DAMN I WISH I WAS AS COOL AS THAT GUY.
haha I kind of had both reactions. IT WAS ALL VERY CONFUSING.
I actually got attached to Spike at first as half of Spike'n'Dru; it was S4 when the character showed up on his own loose of that relationship that I got attached to just Spike. But now on re-watch, oh, his story starts before he even opens his mouth, I love it.
Also, he's a fan of the Sex Pistols. Man after my own heart.
Yes! Spike and I would get along famously, I feel like; we would drink too much and listen to his music and talk trash about Angel everyone.
I love waking up on a rainy sunday morning and seeing an update pertaining to my favorite male character as well. You pretty much voiced all my opinions on Spike and even added in some stuff I overlooked.
Unlike you, I didn't particularly care for Spike right away. I was still all about Angel and angry about this peroxide british vamp and his floozy girlfriend trying to muck things up for my beloved Buffy and Angel. It was when Spike was made vulnerable and reduced to a wheelchair that I started to really feel for him. I need my favorite characters to be lacking something in order to really love them. If they're unstoppable and all powerful, they become simply villains in my eyes. Of course upon re-watching I realized I missed the humor in his first appearance on the show and there were hints of humanity in him before he became the scoobies comic relief.
I just woke up. I don't know what I'm really saying and my grammar is all over the place. Basically I agree with all of this and thank you for writing it :)
