Rules (if you actually feel like following them XD)
1. Comment.
2. I'll reply with a letter, if you so desire.
3. Post the names of five fictional characters whose names begin with that letter, and your thoughts on each. The characters can be from books, movies, or TV shows.
litlover12 gave me the letter A.
1. Aragorn, Lord of the Rings
Also known as Elessar, Wingfoot, Son of Arathorn, Heir of Elendil, Heir of Isildur, etc. etc. etc. One of the many incredible characters populating Tolkien's Middle Earth. I greatly admire this man's courage and discipline, even though I tend to overlook him just a tad, what with my Elf obsession. XD
2. Arwen Undomiel, Lord of the Rings
I adore Arwen, both in the book and the movie. I can't tell you how much I loved that, in the book, Aragorn was expected to win back his kingdom in order to win his bride. But, even so, I have one tiny quibble with Arwen: she did not marry Legolas and save everybody the grief of her dying a mortal, like Tinuviel all over again. Ah, well. I suppose it wouldn't be fair to Aragorn to go to all that trouble to regain his throne and restore the White Tree, only for Arwen to decide she wants to be Queen of Mirkwood instead of Queen of Gondor.
3. Anne Elliot, Persuasion.
I have such a soft spot for Anne. Everybody looks to her for everything, it seems--and yet, she's undervalued by her own father and sisters. Her in-laws actually love her better. Also, she initially refused the man she loved in order to give him a chance to make his own way in the world, without having to worry about providing for a wife and children. I didn't understand that decision at all when I first read the book; but now that I'm older and have read it a few times, I can see why she did so, and admire her for her sacrifice. (Even if I myself would rather be miserable with someone I loved than miserable without.) And who isn't ready to bawl in sympathetic joy when poor, dear Anne finally gets her man?
4. Almanzo Wilder, The Little House Series
Technically, this gentleman doesn't wholly count as a book character, since he was a man in real life as well, but I'll let it slide. He figured in a book series that shaped my childhood--and was actually married to the author and main character. And drove two of the most beautiful Morgans to ever live. How amazing is that?
5. Anakin Skywalker, Star Wars
I've always liked the bad guys, and Darth Vader is among the best of the best on the Dark Side. But I don't like pre-Vader Anakin very much. Whiny, selfish, and arrogant, he was, and I very much pity poor Obi-Wan for having to babysit him for so many years--and then his almost-as-whiny son after him.
P.S.--I almost wish I'd gotten the letter F instead. Then I could be listing the entire house of Finwe and see if I could finally memorize all the names. But then, I would be tapping away in front of my computer all day, so I suppose it's for the best. XD
