As of the beginning of February, I have no job and no health insurance. No, I wasn't fired...I quit because I couldn't handle the hours anymore. And I found out today that my company is small enough not to offer COBRA.
I know I'm pretty damn lucky to have parents who can afford $1,000 a month to pay for the meds that keep me alive and somewhat functioning and that my insurance already paid for the machine that keeps me breathing at night...and $1,000 a month is assuming I have no other medical problems, accidents, etc.
In a class last year, a professor asked us if we knew why America, unlike every other major industrialized nation, doesn't have universal health care. I wryly responded, "Because we have the AMA?" The professor laughed and said I was pretty much on target.
