Chapter 2

“YUKOO!!!” Nami yelled as she ran towards her friend who just came out of the school building headed for home, her mind filled with worried thoughts for Ryutaro.
“Nami? What is it? I thought you had club activities,” Yuko said as Nami finally reached her and was trying to catch her breath.
“I do! But on my way to the tennis court I saw HIM!” Nami said and directed her forefinger towards the gate where a few girls would stop and stare for a while at a guy she knew.
“DAIKI!” Yuko named, surprised.
“Ii ne~ I’m so jealous. You know the JUMP members personally,” Nami said.
“But what is he doing here?” Yuko asked, ignoring Nami’s comment.
“I dunno. Go ask him!” Nami told her and gave Yuko a push towards the gate.
As Yuko went towards the gate she noticed Daiki looking around him, clearly searching for someone. He then took out his phone and began to dial. Just when he had placed his phone by the side of his face, Yuko’s own phone rang.
“Hello?” Yuko said into the receiver just a few meters away from Daiki now.
“Where are you? I need to talk to you,” she heard him say.
“Turn around,” Yuko said as Daiki’s back was facing her now. He turned as she had told him to and his eyes met hers. His face was a mix of relief and concern.
“What did you need to talk to me about?” Yuko asked him, finally reaching his spot as she stowed away her phone, Daiki doing the same.
“I guess you’re worried about Ryutaro…,” Daiki said and just as he had mentioned his name, hurt went back to Yuko’s eyes. “That stupid brat…,” Daiki cursed in his head.
“Come on, let’s go see him,” Daiki said with a sigh as he grabbed Yuko’s hand and pulled her towards the direction of the hospital Ryutaro was confined in.
“But he told me not to come!” Yuko protested. She was really worried about him but she couldn’t help but think that he would start hating her judging by the way he was acting.
“Well I’m telling you to come and I’m older than him so I get to be followed,” Daiki said with a final tone, not allowing anymore objections. He didn’t care if Ryutaro was trying to avoid her. He had told the whole group when he told them about his sickness that he was going to ignore Yuko and build up space between them so as not to hurt her. Ryutaro had asked for respect for his wishes but Daiki just thought it was stupid. He and Ryutaro both had feelings for Yuko and Daiki knew Ryutaro was forcing himself. As much as he wanted Yuko by his side, he didn’t want her to be burdened. It was ridiculous. Daiki couldn’t just stand there and watch Yuko be neglected and all the more he wouldn’t stand it when they would drop the bomb on her one day as they told her all the answers to her questions she had now. He wouldn’t allow it…

Daiki didn’t even knock before coming in Ryutaro’s hospital room. He just opened the door and pushed Yuko in who saw Ryutaro lying on the bed with a bandage on his forehead, reading a manga. He was wearing casual clothes unlike the usual hospital gown. He probably wasn’t staying for long.
“Yuko?!” Ryutaro said, shocked by her entrance. “Daiki, wha-.”
“If you’re not telling Yuko, then I will,” Daiki interrupted, bringing Yuko closer to the bed.
“Daiki…I told you why I didn’t want to tell her…,” Ryutaro said, setting aside his manga to glare up at Daiki.
“Tell me what?” Yuko asked, her eyes going from Ryutaro to Daiki and back again.
“Think about what this is going to do to her! And I’m not doing this for her only. This is also for your own good,” Daiki said, glaring right back at Ryutaro.
Ryutaro hesitated, thinking about what to say next. If he said anymore, Yuko would find out. After a few moments of silence he faced Yuko and said, “Yuko…can you please go get something for us to drink? I’ll pay you later.”
Yuko knew Ryutaro too well. He was trying to get her out to talk to Daiki about whatever he was hiding. He didn’t want her to know. He didn’t trust her anymore.
“If you wanted me to leave then you should have just said so you idiot,” Yuko said, her voice strained as she prevented it from quivering.
“Yuko wait!” Daiki said, grabbing her hand as she turned for the door. “Hora, Ryutaro! Tell her!”
Yuko turned her head to glance at Ryutaro who bowed down his head and she knew that Daiki couldn’t say anything that would make him tell her. She tugged her hand free from Daiki’s grip and said, “Fine! I don’t care if you don’t want to tell me.” With that Yuko ran for the door and shut it behind her. But her legs suddenly couldn’t support the weight of her body and so she fell to the floor, silent tears streaming down her cheeks. He hated her now. He definitely did.
After a few seconds of silence she heard Daiki say from the other side of the door, “You idiot.”
“You very well know why I don’t want to tell her!” That was Ryutaro. He sounded angry.
“When will you grow up?! How do you think she will feel when you’re gone?! Don’t you even consider the fact that she’ll be hurt all the more if you don’t tell her?! You of all people should know that you don’t have all the time in the world to be with her! And you have to understand that none of us can replace the position of Yuko for you. You can’t do this without her,” Daiki said, though he sounded more frustrated than angry, as if he was talking to a little kid.
Ryutaro looked away from Daiki as the anger boiled up within him. He knew that Daiki was doing this partly because he liked Yuko too…maybe even loved her. But Ryutaro never really worried about him as he was not the type to steal unfairly. Daiki was doing this for Yuko…and himself. He didn’t know what would happen to Yuko if he left her without telling. This was all confusing to him and he didn’t know what to do. But this is what he decided on and being the stubborn person that he is, he was planning to stick with it. But seeing Yuko hurt as he lied and pushed her away hurt him too. It frustrated him and made him want to scream out and just outright kill himself for being sick in the first place. He had to convince himself. If he was going to spare Yuko the burden, he was going to have to carry it all by himself without her. He had to lie even to himself.
“I can do this without her,” Ryutaro said in a firm voice, looking back up at Daiki.
“Eh?”
“I can do this without her,” he repeated. “I don’t need her. Anyone of you CAN replace her so just leave her out of this.”
“Ah, Yuko-chan are you okay?! What are you doing on the floor?” Ryosuke asked, his voice coming from he other side of the door and Ryutaro felt his heart stop. “Yuko…”
Ryutaro stood up from the bed and ran to open the door to see Ryosuke pulling her up.
“Ah! Yo, Kodomo. We dropped by for a vi…,” Yabu trailed off sensing the tension between Yuko and Ryutaro.
“Yuko…,” Ryutaro started, immediately wanting to explain as if it were a reflex but stopped, realizing he couldn’t give her words that would explain what she had heard if she weren’t to find out.
Yuko couldn’t reply. All that kept going through her was that she wasn’t needed. The sting from his rejection filled her as she looked at him one last time before she ran out of the hospital.
“Baka! What did you do now?” Yuto scolded the boy, hitting him on the head.
Ryutaro couldn’t move. His heart froze from Yuko’s expression. He didn’t know what to do anymore. Run after her or stay here and let her think what he had planned her to think?
“Go on,” Inoo said, urging the boy forward. “If you don’t go after her now, you’ll regret it.”
Ryutaro didn’t allow himself to think any further and just ran after Yuko, unsure of what he was going to do anymore.
