“Mirai…maybe I can’t give you that tragic love story that you’ve been waiting for, who knows? But one thing I’m sure of now is that…I don’t want to die just yet. So…is this okay?” Ryosuke asked her, moving his hand from her neck to hers, lacing their fingers together.
“Un,” Mirai said, nodding and smiled at him, her heart swelling with happiness that she couldn’t explain.
Ryosuke was more torn than ever and so was Mirai. Ryosuke wanted to make her dreams come true but he wasn’t so sure that Mirai knew just what she was asking for. He wanted her to be happy and if he died, he wasn’t so sure that would make her happy. It wasn’t as if he could kill himself or make him come into an accident or get a fatal disease or anything anyway, As for Mirai, she knew she loved Ryosuke as well, she was sure and she didn’t want him to go but…deep inside her, there was still that desire of wanting to try a life of challenge. All they could do was leave everything up to fate.

“Oi, oi, oi~ The rumour’s been going around for months now but is it actually true?” Daigo asked Mirai and Ryosuke who were sitting on the roof together, Kana was at a meeting.
“None of your business,” Ryosuke replied nonchalantly.
“Oh but this is interesting, ne Takeuchi?” Daigo said to his companion.
“Someone actually got to the tragic romance addict,” Takeuchi agreed. “So how’re you gunna do it, Yamada?”
“Do what?” Ryosuke asked and sighed, trying to keep his composure until the two would get tired of making fun of them and leave. What’s more is that he hoped they wouldn’t say anything to insult Mirai as he felt her growing more tensed beside him.
“How are you going to kill yourself for the benefit of her addiction?” Takeuchi asked and the two laughed.
Ryosuke stood up, loosing it. He didn’t like it that they were calling Mirai an addict but he knew that more than that…he didn’t like the fact that they had mentioned it. The two had silently agreed that they’d leave everything up to life as it would want to go. Ryosuke didn’t want her to sacrifice something she’d been hoping for nor did he want to die and Mirai didn’t want him to die either but still had that silent wish. If only life could compromise with their wants…
“Didn’t I say it was none of your business?” Ryosuke asked his voice raising and Mirai stood up as well, afraid he would do something stupid.
“We’re not making it our business. We simply got curious and how you’re going to handle an addict like her,” Daigo countered and something in Ryosuke snapped.
“Ryosuke, stop,” Mirai whispered to him, holding his hand to suppress him.
“But-,”
“It’s fine…just stop,” Mirai urged and pulled him towards the door.
“Mirai! I hope he dies for you!” Takeuchi yelled after him and Mirai let go of Ryosuke hand, marching up to the jerk and slapped him on the cheek.
“You’re the one who should die for saying such things!” Mirai snapped and went back to Ryosuke, dragging him down the stairs.
“Ne Mirai, where are we going?” Ryosuke asked when he realized that they weren’t heading back to the classroom.
“To the park,” Mirai replied casually, continuing to tug him along as she turned her head to smile back at him.
“Such a rebel,” Ryosuke joked and chuckled.
“I just don’t feel like going back to class right now, after being told there was a rumour,” Mirai explained. She couldn’t believe people were gossiping behind their backs and they didn’t even notice.
Ryosuke silently agreed with her and was happy that she didn’t even bother to ask if he wanted to come along with her or if it was okay with him that they would skip class. It meant that she knew he only wanted to be with her and she with him. One of the millions of silent understandings they shared. Ryosuke then jogged up beside her so that she didn’t have to seem to tug him along, instead, they were walking side by side.

“Ryosuke…,” Mirai said, looking down on her hands, resting on her lap as they had settled down on the bench and the cool late autumn breeze surrounded them.
“Nani?” he asked, sensing her sudden change of mood, her tone serious.
“I don’t want you to die,” Mirai admitted and Ryosuke stood up from his seat to kneel down in front of her, holding her hands.
“I’m not going to die!” he said and laughed, trying to lighten her mood.
“I don’t know what I thought when I dreamt of having my life as a tragedy…,” Mirai went on.
“You thought that it wasn’t a tragedy at all. You thought that it was a battle. Something you wanted to try, to see if you’d win, along with the person you loved,” Ryosuke told her and she knew what he said was truel. She was never being cruel on asking for something like that. Besides, it wasn’t Ryosuke she wanted to be in danger; it could be her as well. It was something she wanted to try. To see, to prove to herself how strong love can be for herself.
“Mirai, you don’t have to give up your wish. I decided on that years ago when I admitted to myself the feelings I had for you,” Ryosuke said, leaning his forehead on hers and Mirai placed her hand on his head, the other hand wrapped in his.
“Just let whatever happens happen, right?” she asked him, closing her eyes.
“Un, you can keep your fingers crossed,” Ryosuke said, kissing the top of her head as she tilted her head down.
“After all…this is nice as well,” Mirai said. “It’s okay if it’s just like this…”
Mirai crossed her two fingers that were wrapped in his.
After sometime had passed the two started talking like they always had during those seemingly endless nights, joking about whatever, teasing each other with each little detail or simply talking about what food they were craving for. And later on they started playing under the trees as the orange and red leaves fell around them, forming what looked like a pool of fire on the soil.
Ryosuke ran over to Mirai, wrapping his arms around her waist, tackling her, which made her fall to the ground, her back cushioned by a pile of leaves.
“Get off me, Yama-buta~!” Mirai complained, laughing, trying to shove him off her but then he started tickling her sides and Mirai found herself defenceless against him.
“Who’s the buta?!” Ryosuke asked, pretending to be angry.
“You are!” Mirai replied, sticking her tongue out at him teasingly.
“Take it back!” Ryosuke yelled, tickling her all the more and Mirai laughed even harder.
“Iyada!”
“Omae!”
“Ah, hai, hai! I give up!” Mirai said when she felt like her stomach was going to collapse from all the laughing.
“Yatta,” Ryosuke laughed and grinned triumphantly as Mirai pouted at him.
Ryosuke came lower towards her and made their lips meet, then leaned down even more to deepen the kiss.
After a while he pulled away and grinned playfully at her. “Omae wa sukidayo~!”
“Un…ore mo…suikidayo~,” Mirai said, serious yet joking which made Ryosuke’s heart swell but he couldn’t help laughing at her choice of words.
“Don’t use ‘ore’! ‘Atashi’ suits you more,” Ryosuke told her and laughed, standing up.
“Urusai,” Mirai replied and took his hand that was extended towards her, helping her up.
“Shall we go home?” Ryosuke asked her as she brushed of the leaves that clung to her uniform.
“Okay,” Mirai agreed and they walked hand in hand towards the bus stop. When they saw that the bus was already there, they ran towards it, before the door would close on them.
“What are you doing?” Mirai asked and giggled as she noticed Ryosuke’s eyes were closed in deep thought once they had settled on their seats.
“Shh, I’m trying to remember something,” Ryosuke told her.
“What?” she asked.
“Ah! I remember…I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future…,” Ryosuke started, his eyes serious, looking straight ahead, avoiding her gaze.
“Eh?” Mirai said, confused where that came from.
“But right now…what I’m feeling is 100% not a lie. I can say that with confidence,” Ryosuke said and Mirai smiled at him when she recognized the words he was saying.
“For me…as long as it’s you saying it…it doesn’t matter how slowly you say it, I’ll listen. If you can’t talk over the phone, then I’ll come to see you just like this. If you want to walk, no matter how slow it’ll be, I’ll walk with you. I…when it comes to you…I like you,” Ryosuke finished, finally looking back at her and grinned. “How was it?”
“Wonderful~ but why were you suddenly repeating the lines of Asou-kun from 1 Litre of Tears?” Mirai asked him.
“I just wanted to see how it feels like to say it. Besides, I wanted you to experience someone saying that to you,” Ryosuke explained.
“Baka~!” Mirai teased and hit him on the arm playfully. “You skipped a few lines though.”
“It was too long~!” Ryosuke said defensively. There were a lot of times when he’d watch that certain part of the drama with Mirai. It was her favourite scene. That and the scene where she told Asou-kun to live on but he wasn’t so sure those were the right lines to say at the moment.
“Dem, sugoi yo, Ryosuke~ It was just like Aso-,” Mirai started but was cut off when the bus had jerked to the side which made her tilt to the side violently, her upper body falling on Ryosuke’s lap and she heard a loud thud.
