An icon table generator update

Sep 15, 2012 08:46

Not sure if anyone else is still using the icon table generator, but I finally pushed some of the changes I've made to it on to my website. Since getting back to iconning, I've been using a slightly modified version of the generator on my local, but haven't tested it or put it up, because I'm lazy like that. Since I've gotten back to iconning I've realized some things that don't really fit well with a workflow, and some features that I wanted myself...and as with all the hobby dev work I've done in the past, that makes me want to work on ~stuff~

So what's new?

A different default table generator template

I've changed the default selected template to the liquid rows/columns with no background, based on previous feedback. The old default is still available, along with the rest of the presets, from the dropdown field, if you want to keep using it :)

A textarea for your icons

Instead of needing to enter your URLs one by one in text fields, I've added a single textarea where the URLs are supposed to be entered, one line for each URL. It's basically really like the previous method, only not so much tabbing (and not as "cool"). The thing is, while I was still using Photobucket, they added the feature to allow you to get a list of URLs from an album...and having to separate each of those for the generator was a waste of time. Even now when I'm not hosting my stuff in PB anymore, I still find it a lot easier to just collect the URLs into a plain text file and copy-paste that into one textarea.

I've kept the original input method still, if you prefer that! I may do away with it in the future though--feel free to weigh in on your preferences in the comments :)

Additional icon notes

Now with more notes power! If you want your icons to be labelled not by number but by a certain word instead, the generator can now do that too. Right after your URL, add a space and then the word you wish to include. If you want to keep the number of the icon, add a hash (#) to your label where you want the number to show. Otherwise the generator will continue counting only on the next icons without notes or hashes.

Note that this is meant to be SHORT notes only. If you type a paragraph in there, it's going to throw your table out of whack. You've been warned.

Some examples:

To completely replace icons #2 and #3 with a theme but leave the rest numbered

http://www.domain.com/path/to/image1.png
http://www.domain.com/path/to/image2.png red orange
http://www.domain.com/path/to/image3.png yellow
http://www.domain.com/path/to/image4.png
http://www.domain.com/path/to/image5.png

To add a note to icons #2 and #3 but keep the numbering intact

http://www.domain.com/path/to/image1.png
http://www.domain.com/path/to/image2.png # red
http://www.domain.com/path/to/image3.png yellow - #
http://www.domain.com/path/to/image4.png
http://www.domain.com/path/to/image5.png

That's all!

That's it :) I hope the new update is useful, apologies for keeping the old dated look of my Bauble website--have not being feeling up to doing any web design/dev work for a while now. Anyway I figure it's best to do changes in little steps for this ;)

So head on over to the generator to check out the changes \o/ And if you have any comments, complaints, etc please do let me know in the comments!
