Immigrant Removal
What kind of society are we? Since 15th July, an 8 year old boy has been kept locked up by the British immigration removal authority. The boy is Iranian, he and his mother having fled Iran after an arrest warrant was put out for her following the discovery of extracts of Salman Rushdie's Satanic Verses in her flat. The child's lawyer has instructed that his mental health is suffering as a result of this prolonged incarceration. He has become clingy, and often wakes in the middle of the night screaming. According to his mother, the 8 year old (known as Child M for legal reasons) displayed similar behaviour following the death of his father. His hair has started falling out, and he has developed a large rash on his chest similar to ringworm.
Fucking appalling. Total lack of compassion for this child and his family. They fled Iran following unjust, and by our standards, ludicrous persecution. What safety and reassurance do we offer them, but locking them up simply for demanding more of life? What kind of developed society are we, locking up minors?
