I whispered my goodbye
to the sunset-maker.
Watching the sky
awash in hues of pink
and orange.
Everything fades
and sunlight becomes
a past tense
forgotten at the wayside.
Left wondering
what could have happened
to make you feel
the need to leave,
with nary an explanation.
The thoughts
circle in confusion
and fright --
as if speech would
break the spell.
Everything is hidden away
until we are but shells
of our former selves.
As the night deepens
and all thoughts
turn inwards,
realization of the futility
of this situation
is apparent.
And already,
the bell chimes
and signal a new reality --
and already, it's the day after.
