I whispered my goodbye to the sunset-makers.
“Lisa, you know I would have told you if I had a choice.” The main light was off, and half of your face was blanketed by shadows, which goes under the heading of ‘ironic’ in my mind.
I understand that your hands were tied, and telling anyone would be a serious risk. I know you would have explained everything if you could.
But you aren’t who I thought you were, and everything I knew about you isn’t true, though I want to believe you didn’t lie as much as I think you did.
That's irrelevant though, because you’re leaving. You can go back to being yourself, and laugh in secret about your time spent in hiding. I hate the thought of just being your in-transition girlfriend, though that’s probably what I was.
It was clouding my judgement, but that didn’t mean anything either because when you leave, all records of Katharine Walker's existance will mysteriously vanish, and I can't handle that thought either. “You’re fired.”
You nodded, practiced indifference hardening your features, and I understand now that it doesn’t all come from years of practicing law. I counted the steps as you walked away, out of my office, out of the hospital, never to return.
I almost can’t believe you’re gone. But I have a job to do, and House is shouting at me for having the radical notion of hiring Stacey Warner after you left, but we need an attorney, and she can do the job.
And already it’s the day after.
