Things I would have never expected in a million years:

Devendra Banhart's new video for Carmensita just was advertised to me on my Comcast homepage. And Best Week Ever (dot tv).

It's because Natalie Portman is in it, who is his new squeeze -- did it happen before? after? during the filming? No one knows.

I had a hilarious conversation with winter_baby a few months ago, about her spotting Natalie Portman with "her homeless boyfriend," to which I was like, "You mean Devendra Banhart?" And she had no idea that that was what Devendra Banhart looked like.

People are getting their hate on for Devendra on YouTube and Best Week Ever, and it's really pissing me off. Because he's a crazy dude who flies his freak flag high, and I love him for it. Usually the 'musicians' that are advertised to me on my Comcast homepage are mediocre to say the least, and we need a whole lot less mediocrity in the music industry right now, for fucking sure.

I know there are people who don't like him, legitimately, and though I really don't understand why, I accept it -- but the people who just SEE a weird music video with a long-haired, bearded guy wearing a sarong and go, "Ew, what a freak," it pisses me off.

Also, even though he was born in Houston, raised in Caracas (Venezuela), and is stuck in LA now, he went to school in SF (San Francisco Art Institute) and for me he'll always be synonymous with San Francisco, California, and home.

Last summer I read an interview with him about his album that was about to come out, (Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon) and apparently he's been living in a crazy log cabin in the middle of Topanga Canyon with a bunch of other friends, musicians, and people travelling through.

Sometimes lately, I can think of nothing I'd rather do.
