and hey there, mrs. lovely moon, you're lonely and you're blue

Apparently my internet hacking came back. Hoping it lasts a little longer this time, or maybe Time Warner Cable can actually call me back. (Seriously.)

Honestly, the thing making me miss London the most is the lack of any sort of fucking biscuits here. I mean, at certain delis I've seen half packets of McVitie's digestives, but they're $6.49. As opposed to 79p for a FULL PACKET. I hate you.

Last night in the wee hours as I was attempting to do some academic work (how? what? how?), while distracting myself I realised I had an mp3 of the Boosh promoting on Colin Murray's BBC Radio One show in December. Parts of it are featured in the 'Publicity Tour' special feature on the series three DVDs -- it's the one where Colin asks them if they'd ever thought of writing an episode of Doctor Who, and Julian says that they should be ON it. "I am Doctor Who! Noel's my ditzy assistant." (LOL FOREVER! THE OPPORTUNITIES!)

But all of a sudden, at the end of the interview, comes this:

NOEL: "It's weird because what happens is, I went to this Devendra Banhart concert last night, and there's lots of these purist fans; they thought he was better when it was just him and a guitar, and he was really folk, and now he's got a band, and you know they're all sort of a little bit annoyed, sort of angry -- and now there's some people, they're saying to us, 'I liked your first series best.' Which, in a way, there are some great ideas in it, but it's clearly not as good as the second series, and hopefully not as good as the third series. But you get these purists that love the sort of accidental, sort of chaotic, sort of raw..."

JULIAN: "It's like the further back they go the cooler they think they are. 'I really like that gig you did when you were...you know, the second gig you ever did. It was pretty good. Yeah, it's much better than what you do now.'

NOEL: "'Loved what you said to your mum, when you came home when you got a bad report. I was there. It was amazing.'"

JULIAN: "It's sort of slightly annoying as well..."

NOEL: "Yeah, you get *better* at what you do!"

JULIAN: "But also, you also, you've been working so hard, your eyes are bleeding, your brain's boiling, you're trying to do this last show, and the last thing you want to hear is that your first series is best..."

My immediate responses:
- OH MY GOD. I almost went to that Devendra show!
- Oh man, Noel's a Devendra fan!...Of COURSE Noel would be a Devendra fan.
- Re: Purists of any sort? EXACTLY. ExACTLY.

It was weird to hear him talk about Devendra, because Noel always talks about bands in interviews and never once have I heard him mention Devendra or anyone similar. And Devendra's SO synonymous with California with me, whereas Noel's such a product of London. But it makes all too much sense. I mean, they both have this charmingly deluding 60s/70s attitude, a more than healthy dose of psychedelia, long crazy hair (though...differently), and apparently Devendra's art show at the SFMOMA that I missed was very similar to Noel's art show.

So basically my new goal is to see Noel Fielding at a Devendra Banhart show, and we can all bond over being children of hippies.

shameless hippieism, devendra, the mighty boosh, doctor who
