I'm kind of -- unenthused by everything right now.
Haven't watched the news. At all. Talked to my friend S., who almost got arrested today in downtown San Francisco. Apparently the police used power saws (!) to cut apart the pipes that some protesters used to link each other together.
She was really encouraged by the whole thing. Thought that today's protest, especially, made a huge impact. I asked her in what way did this specifically make a difference, to which she replied that it showed the government that the people don't want war. Um. Haven't the other protests proved that as well? But she let me know that since there wasn't a police permit, it was more "rebellious."
What the fucking ever. So what, people are getting arrested. But, newsflash! We're still bombing Iraq! I've stated this before and I'll say it again: Even if the whole nation protested against it, the Bush administration would do what they wanted, as evidenced by
this article. I don't know if I'm making myself clear, but I'm tired and disillusioned. S. is almost idealistic about the anti-war effort, and I don't understand why. I've been to three protests, but I did so on principle.
Maybe I'm pessimistic, but I tend to be so about America: I had no doubt that we would eventually go to war.
I support those who protest, and I join them frequently. But I just don't understand why they think it's going to work. Believing that seems to show faith in their government, which almost contradicts the whole purpose of their protests anyhow.
People are going to be billy-clubbed. People are going to be arrested (again.) People are going to provoke the police, and at some point, things are going to get ugly.
And we'll still be bombing Iraq.
"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a Democracy, a Fascist dictatorship, or a Parliament, or a Communist Dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them that they are being attacked and denounce the Pacifists for lack of Patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

Fuck it,
anniesj, I am so sorry that I haven't gotten back to you regarding "bang/whimper." I just was finally able to download it to this computer to read, but I am exhausted. I'll send you some feedback this weekend, I swear.
And I'm still having problems downloading animated gif icons to the desktop. Will someone try to help me (again)?
Good night, and wait. It's the equinox tonight, no? Spring is here!
