The Daggers- LegendLand Ficlet

Title: The Daggers
Characters: Richard/Kahlan
Rating: PG
Kahlan took her turn doing watch while Cara, Zedd, and Richard slept. She sat staring at the fire and listening for any unfamiliar noise. The fire reflected into the handle of her daggers. She took one out and stared at it. She never really had the time to truly look at them. They were magnificent. The hands holding the orb reminded her of her confessor powers, how she held the life of her confessed men and women in her hands- the same hands that confessed them.
These daggers were a part of her, as much as her white dress was. They symbolized her strength, her ability to defend herself and the ones she loved in battle. They gave her a different kind of power than her confessor power did, a power all her own.
Kahlan turned the dagger over in her hand, watch the fire dance of its silver edges. She wondered how many D’Harans and Sisters of the Dark lost their lives to these simple blades. She regretted none of it. They threatened her friends and the man she loved more than anything. She used the Sword of Truth once, but it was nothing like her daggers. They are extensions of her hands when she used them. Those are the same words the confessor who taught her to use them told her.
Confessor Maria was Kahlan’s mentor and she insured Kahlan knew how to defend herself besides using her confessor power. At first Kahlan resented her for it, because she wanted to learn all she could on the history of confessors. Now, she was more than grateful for the power these daggers gave her and what they could do for her.
“Something wrong?” Richard snuck in next to her on the log.
“Oh, no,” Kahlan gave him a smile and put the dagger back in her boot. “Just making sure they were there.”
“Those daggers are as much a part of you as the Sword of Truth is to me,” Richard gave her hand a squeeze.
“They are, they truly are…” Kahlan put her head on his shoulder and watched the fire with him.
