I agree, he should've come in person. But...that's not always easy. Knowing him, he wanted to say good-bye in the way he thought would hurt both him and us the least.
Just believe. Believe that you'll see him again. Keep believing that you'll see him again, and you will some day. It may not be tomorrow, it may not be ten years from now. But as long as you never give up hope, it'll happen.
