ST Episode Thoughts

Warning: Spoilers
Episode 19: Arena

Thoughts whilst watching:

- “KIRK [OC]: You do anything you think necessary to protect the ship. Leave orbit, maximum warp, anything. Clear?
Ha more evidence of how all important ship is to Kirk.

- The Metron’s are incredibly irritating. Firstly, the Gorn ship and the Enterprise are passing by their solar system; not interfering with it, which makes the Metron’s the actual interfering party. And if their so able to scan the ships system and work out “hostile intentions” then can’t they work out that both parties were tying to defend themselves and that this here is possibly a misunderstanding? And if that is the case can they then not hold the Captain’s in a meeting room to talk rather then to fight? Wouldn’t that be more “civilised”? It seems to be in my opinion more of a case of Metron’s looking for entertainment then anything else, which in my opinion makes them the worst party. They are also very patronizing.

- The Gorn’s defending against invasion, also irritating. It hardly matters whether the settlement of Cestus Three is an invasion; it doesn’t make the Gorn any more “right”. Negotiate first; look at alternatives, before killing hundreds on an impulse, actually doing that is never “right”.

- This is the 2nd episode in a row, where Kirk disappears of the bridge. Uhura’s scream seems to me to be so out of character. It’s like someone said, oh lets have a female crewmember scream now!

- “Like most humans, I seem to have an instinctive revulsion to reptiles. I must fight to remember that this is an intelligent, highly advanced individual, the Captain of a starship, like myself, undoubtedly a dangerously clever opponent.”
Good point, I had to keep trying to remember that.

- This episode reminds me a lot of Justin Lee Collins “Bring back Star Trek”, where he tried remaking the fight scene with the Gorn.

- “MCCOY: What are you going to do, Mister Spock?
SPOCK: I'm going to wait, Doctor. There's little else I can do.
MCCOY: What about the Captain?
SPOCK: If I could help him, I would. I cannot.
MCCOY: Now, you're the one that's always talking about logic. What about some logic now? Where's the Captain, Mister Spock?”
I don’t get why every time Kirk disappears, McCoy has to almost have a go at Spock, honestly! There’s nothing the man can do!

- How does all that powder not fall out the other end of the tube? Or is the other end not open?

- Kirk running with broken leg, I’m sorry to say, it looks very funny. Reminds me of an icon someone has made of Spock running, with the caption “My fandom runs like a girl” (I think that’s what it says).

- And finally, how does Kirk not tear his shirt in this episode? I would have sworn this would be the episode for torn shirt moment! Ah well.
