I finished Kushiel's Mercy over the weekend. I really enjoyed it, but didn't post about it because I have this vague sense of dissatisfaction about the book that I couldn't pinpoint. I thought it was a great end to the series, the characters stayed true to themselves, there was good plot development, it was exciting, etc., etc. All the stuff I look for in a good book. A minor detractor is that there were a lot of random appearances by secondary characters as if to give them a bit more screen time before the end, but that wasn't a big issue.
So I've been thinking about it for days, trying to decide what bothered me about the conclusion to this series. Late last night it hit me -
No one dies. The hero saves the world, gets the girl, his parents live, her parents live, no one loses any major body parts. It's all sunshine and roses.
Melanie Rawn has ruined me for reading epic fantasy novels. If she had written these books, Joscelin would've died at least 2 books ago, and Ysandre would've turned out to be Melisande in an elaborate mask. But none of that happened - everyone got their Happily Ever After, and I'm left feeling disappointed.
I need help :D
Anyway, great book. Better than the previous one, and overall a satisfying conclusion to the series. 9/10
