What Is A Man?

What is a man?

Is it courage
that wakes
violently
(or slowly
with determination,
purposefully,
powerfully)
to take
truth
and progress
in his hands
with meekness
but
without doubt

is it breadth
which takes
him
and spreads him
about the empty space
between the stars
shows him
that we are empty
of fullness
yet steely
and ready
to leave
when that whore,
Death,
comes
for him
(for you?)

is it strength
so superficial and bored
but ready
to rise
when need pleads
and light
(shining through
in plumes
and towers)
smiles
warmly
upon a boy
(One can stand
when all others
lay down
in their graves,
devoid of grace)

is it mirth
that reckless forgetting
that lifts
yet pulls
mirth
that brings you back
to belief
in the unbelievable

So what is home
but a word
a convenient thing
that we search for
yet cannot find
Something we arbitrarily
ascribe
to places
that we sleep
and dream
where we touch
and make love
Where sins
are kept silent
(where spiders
and rivers
drown
in the endless oceans
of what we try
to
be)
