I started Stephen King's Cell last night and read through the morning. I finally had to stop so I could take a shower and start getting kidlet ready for school, followed by errands and more phone calls. I had only 20 pages left by the time I clocked in at noon, and I finally finished between patrons about 30 minutes ago. Yay for me! The first book ( Read more... )

Ooooh... I *just* started that two days ago... haven't had time to devour it unfortunately...

It was faboo! And I used my cell the next day (with no small amount of trepidation), so I made it through okay.

I stopped reading King years ago because he just scares me so much, but now I'm thinking about reading Misery. Have you read any of his other books? If so, what would you recommend?

I adore King... I know that sometimes he writes some weird shite but I will always have a special place in my heart for him.

Misery is great but for an intense and very cool scare try 'Gerald's Game'... really simple concept but one of his books that scared me the most. You have to read 'The Stand' ofcourse (it's my favourite King and I reread every now and again) Also 'Dragon's Eye' which he wrote for his daughter and isn't an out and out horror but a fantasy (with horror undertones).

'The Green Mile' is excellent (yes, I know, Tom Hanks movie bleah) and for novellas you should try and find both 'Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption' (the movie Shawshank Redemption which is my favourite all-time movie) and 'The Long Walk'.

Oh, I love The Stand! Is Gerald's Game something about someone being tied to a bed? I think I heard about that one years ago. If that's the one, it DOES sound interesting. Hmmm...okay, I think I have to remember this is horror and not S/J, S/D, OT3 or OT4 fic. I'm sure being tied to a bed in a King novel is not nearly as pleasant as it is in one of those....

I'm going to try to get around to reading some of these you recced. Right now I have the 3rd Ya-Ya Sisterhood book sitting in front of me, but I haven't managed to begin it yet. *sigh*

Yes... that's Gerald's Game... I read the blurb and am like... huh, how does someone write a *whole* novel about someone being tied to a bed but it's excellent...

Hee... and no... not as pleasant as it sounds... ;)

*checks online card catalog at library*

Meh. We don't have it. Not surprised. It's practically the Bible Belt here. I guess I'll have to wait to read it until we move. I'm sure whatever library we're near then will have it.

Misery is good.

I am mad at Stephen King right now. I just finished the dark tower series, and the last book was like some sort of cruel joke. The first four were great though.
The Stand is a good one if you haven't read it yet. Eyes of the Dragon is great and not real scary or anything, it's actually very un-King like. :)

I think I've read almost all of his books, except the more recent ones. He was just never the same after getting hit by that van. He kept trying to put himself in his own stories and it was very jarring. And annoying.

Maybe I'll read Cell, since it comes so highly recommended...

Okay, is it pathetic that I really want to read those now?

I've read The Stand; it's one of my favorites of his along with It.

Self-insertion, huh? I wonder if he writes bad fanfic somewhere online.

I haven't read anything recent of his except Cell, but my mom bought Misery and The Dark Half for me at a book sale (even though she's thinks I'm crazy for reading horror because my imagination tends to run away with me).

I think you'd probably like Cell if you read King for his writing style, but if you want highly original characters and situations, it may just get you a little aggravated. I found myself reminded of different scenes and plot devices that were in The Stand when I read it, and the characters added towards the ( ... )
