Better spaceships than ferriswheels: If life's a circle you must go up but musn't you also go down?
♥ Did I tell you about the IELTS? (International English Language Testing System, brought to you by Cambridge university) Well, I needed to do it because they probably will want some proof I can string two sentences together before they let me go to uni in Scotland and it went pretty well, I got an overall 8.00 (how I tanked the writing section, let me count the ways in which 60 minutes are not enough for someone who's been writing academic essays for years and it's used to rewriting things eight times). Anyway, that's 8 out of 9 (the English, they can't help being this weird) which in normal people 1 to 10 grading means 8,8. :) Not bad.
♥ I just watched The Kids are All Right and wow, it was awesome. Maybe 8.5 out of 10 but still well worth recommending. I have some problems with the sheer amount of straight sex I had to endure in a movie supposedly about a lesbian couple and their kids.Oth, the lesbian love scene was shot under a sheet! And a total failure to boot, even if that was implied to be because they are married and being married makes your sex life boring. I loved the lesbian couple watching male gay porn and being disgusted by lesbian porn because of its fakeness. I loved the girl in love with her best friend and the boy so lost that his best friend is a complete tool and how many of the threads don’t really go anywhere because that’s life.
♥ There’s this Indian prince who publicly came out. He’s the only Royal to have done so.
♥ Me acabo de dar cuenta de que “El Príncipe Feliz” de Física o Química sigue la historia de “King and King” by Linda de Haan (Rey y Rey). Claro que como libro infantil de tema gay es imposible de encontrar, lo que ya me paso con "And tango makes three" que es sobre una pareja de pinguínos que adopta un huevo (y es una historia real basada en algo que paso en el zoológico de NY).
♥ También descubrí a este grupo raro gracias a Los Protegidos, por una coincidencias de esas, tienen un canción llamada “No quiero ser normal”, que es el título del capítulo de hoy. No estoy del todo de acuerdo con todos los mensajes que trasmite pero… es muy gracioso igualmente. Se llaman El Cuarteto de Nos.

Pretty soon, being the only person who was into something didn’t make you outcast; it made you ahead of the curve and someone people were quicker to befriend than shun.
Which so reminds me why meta incenses me so. Not that he doesn't have a point, sort of: Ironically, surface dwellers began repurposing the symbols and phrases and tokens of the erstwhile outcast underground.
But a small point about things becoming popularized doesn't excuse the huge stupidity of saying people are no longer marginalized for being different, that's the *only* reason to marginalize.
I think HIS interests stopped being marginal and so he concluded marginalization had ended, which is beyond blind. It is true that the value of fan culture is in its secretiveness and certainly I feel a certain disconnect with people who like HP but aren't in slash fandom. Seperis fixed my brain with her post: “well, yeah, if by geek culture you mean men”, which raises a few interesting points about access to culture as well. When I was 13 and gained access to the well of information that was the internet and watched hours of anime with rudimentary English and downloaded it with basic computer skills... It was a second coming, before that I could only get books very rarely and even more rarely the books I wanted (there was the second hand book market at el Parque Centenario, where I got a LOT of Stephen King and Sidney Sheldon) And then I used up my saving to buy books 1 and 2 of His Dark Materials in an actual bookshop and what happened? The third part never made it to Argentina. I moved to Europe shortly after but otherwise I wouldn't have been able to afford the 70 dollars it'd had cost me to have it sent to Argentina.
Just one more thing, if you want to be real geek in the Spanish speaking world? You don't get things served in a silver plate, you need to learn English. No question. If you don't you're reduced to whatever they decide to translate (badly), which is to say, very little and pretty randomly if you judge by quality. I'm fairly certain this is true for most other languages, so, recapping, white, middle/upper class, male and English speaking.
