What happens when I don't have cable?

What with “Heroes” airing last night, my 2006-2007 television season is all scheduled. Starting last year, I tried to get back into network television watching after years of almost pure cable, but was stymied by my retail job. Now, I’ve got myself a regular 9 to 5, which while not the most stable in the universe, at least allows me my nights. ( Read more... )

No problem. There won't be specific names, as I can never remember them, but hopefully character descriptions will be enough.

Episode #1:

Skeet Ulrich returns home to Jericho, Kansas after a long, mysterious absence, to ask his father (the mayor) to release money his grandfather left him in his will. We do not know what he plans to do with it. He runs into his old best friend, his friend's deaf sister, and a previous love interest on his way through town. His love interest has moved on, and is going to pick up her boyfriend at the airport. Skeet's father refuses to release the money, and Skeet heads out of town.

Cue: Mushroom cloud in the distance. Denver has been bombed.

Distracted by the mushroom cloud, a man in another car swerves into Skeet's car, causing them both to crash. The other people die, and Skeet's leg is injured. His car is totaled, so he starts to limp back into town.

Meanwhile, the town is in an uproar because a school bus on field trip has not returned yet. Skeet's father, the mayor, and brother, deputy mayor, try to hold things together. They get help from a St. Louis cop recently moved to Jericho.

Skeet, while walking back to down, is met by two small children looking for help. They're from the missing bus, which has crashed. They lead Skeet back: the bus driver is dead, and the chaperone is injured. One of the children has injured her neck and can't breathe. Skeet performs an emergency trachectomy and saves her. He drives the bus back.

Cops looking for the children, in the meantime, find a bus pulled over on the road. It's a prison bus, and it seems empty. It's not. The cops are killed by escaped prisoners.

In Jericho, a young man who works at the local grocery store has a final message from his mother on his answering machine right before she died. His mother was in Atlanta.

A riot nearly starts over gasoline, but is stopped by Skeet's father. More trouble is averted when Skeet drives into town with the bus full of children.

Finally, Skeet's former love interest is still on her way to pick up her boyfriend at the airport. She hits a whole bunch of bumps and pulls over. Dead birds strewn the streets. She doesn't know what has happened.

End of Episode #1.

Is it sad that I'm absolutely horrified at the thought of all the dead birds, but the people don't really bother me?
