In the span of about a month, Wane had lost both of his flatmates in separate circumstances, and gained a new one - who he hadn't really spoken to since she moved in. Mostly because their schedules didn't match up. Tonight, however, the pub was in the hands of one of the two bartenders (and the bloke whose job was to blend in and stop any altercations that might lead to the loss of furniture) he'd hired, and his plan was to drop in later to check in on things. So there was the possibility he might see her before he left.

Having decided to eat before work, he'd gone out to the closest grocery store and bought a little something that would be dinner for him - though probably junk food for anyone else - and entered the lat to the smell of food, home-cooked food (something that hadn't happened around Wayne in a while).

"Oh!" Vicky's eyes slid to the bag in Wayne's hand as she realised she hadn't actually told him about her plans. She'd been so busy at work that it must have completely slipped her mind. Oops.

"Um, hello," she said awkwardly. "I thought we could -- I mean, I've cooked dinner, and there's enough to share. If you want." She could feel herself beginning to blush, and hurriedly turned around under the pretence of stirring the sauce.

"Hey," Wayne replied as he came to the entrance into the kitchen. What he had in the bag did appeal to him more, which was probably because of the fact that it was ninety percent junk, but he figured that since Vicky had gone through all the trouble. "That's totally fine."

It kind of reminded him, though, of Megan, and her attempts to get him to eat something that wasn't junk. Though, obviously, it hadn't worked, it was still the memory, and the half-smile that had crossed his face before Vicky turned her back faded just a bit. Shaking it off, he put his bag on the counter, thinking he'd just put it away later, if he remembered. "So... what're we having?"

If Vicky had known what was in Wayne's bag, she would have been horrified. She believed wholeheartedly in eating proper food and taking care of one's body. Well, he was lucky she was his new flatmate, because she would make sure he started eating more healthily. She was, of course, unaware of Megan's unsuccessful attempts to do the same thing -- but it probably wouldn't have discouraged her even if she had known.

"Roast lamb and vegetables," she said promptly. "Potatoes, carrots and parsnips. And I'm just finishing the gravy. Would you like to lay the table?" She glanced sideways at the bag Wayne had just put on the counter, wondering whether she should be nosy later and see what he had bought. Just out of interest! To see what he liked to eat!

Wayne was all for eating what she had made, as long as it didn't include having to eat any of the vegetables, and gave a slight nod as he went to get the dishes, commenting, "Sounds good."

Taking out enough for two people, he set them out on the table, kind of the way he used to when he'd lived with his parents.

Too bad for Wayne, because Vicky made sure he had plenty of vegetables as she served up. They looked so nice, all cut into chunky strips and seasoned with rosemary and thyme! Who wouldn't like this meal?

"So," Vicky said conversationally as she sat down and began tucking in. "What were your previous flatmates like?" Perhaps it was an awkward question, but she found it usually opened up the topic of how things worked in a flat. You know, such as cleaning and things like that. Of course, there was also a little part of her that wanted to know who she was replacing.

Wayne frowned slightly and briefly at the sight of the healthy food on his plate, and ignored them completely for the roast lamb. Maybe if he was lucky, he could toss them in the garbage while her back was turned.

"Oh. Well." Wayne paused at the question, but kind of shrugged it off as he spoke in between bites of food. "There's Maty, she's kind of loud actually. But she moved up a few floors to live with her fiancé. And then there was..." Wayne paused. Yeah, so it wasn't like he'd been head over heels in love with her, but he'd cared about her a lot, as a friend and as more than that, so it was kind of awkward to talk about. Realising that he'd had yet to finish his sentence though, he continued, "um, Megan. There was Megan. She was very into keeping everything neat and clean and stuff."

Vicky had grown up making sure her three younger brothers ate all their greens, so it was sort of automatic for her to glance at Wayne's plate. When she saw that he wasn't eating the vegetables a slight frown creased her forehead briefly, before she decided to let it pass. He was a grown bloke, after all -- it was up to him what he ate.

"I've seen Maty around," Vicky said. "Well, she's hard to miss, isn't she? I don't think I ever met Megan, but she sounds like a nice girl." Vicky could appreciate a person who liked keeping things neat and clean.

Wayne didn't notice the look Vicky gave his plate as he pushed a few vegetables around, though mostly he focused his energy on anything but the healthy foods.

"Yeah, Maty's definitely hard to miss." Wayne said with a nod, and gave a slight smile. "And, yeah, she is." For a moment, a nostalgic look crossed his face, but it faded almost immediately.

"Do you still see her? Megan, I mean?" Vicky had noticed the hesitation before Wayne first spoke Megan's name, and then the brief flash of wistfulness on his face. Something -- call it women's intuition -- was telling her to tread carefully around this subject, but she couldn't help being curious.

After all, she told herself, wasn't it better to get the facts straight now so she didn't jump to conclusions and inadvertently say something wrong later on?

Any resemblance or hint of a smile that may have been on Wayne's faded in the wake of her question, as an automatic reaction the mention of Megan could actually cause every once in a while. Pursing his lips, he slowly shook his head, knowing he should answer, because Vicky didn't know about all the bad.

"Not really. It's sort of difficult what with her being back in her hometown and all." Weeks later and he still couldn't quite keep the bitter tinge out of his voice.
