From MSN.com:  Re: a Johnny Depp quote on singing for Sweeney Todd

It was during those sessions that he had an epiphany on how to play the part for a cinematic audience "The idea of me standing in front of a guy at a piano singing scales? My instinct said this is wrong. It doesn't matter if you know how to sing. Just sing and that's what I did."

Wow. You are all gung ho to hate this movie, aren't you? haha!! I have the movie soundtrack and I think he does a GREAT job at the singing. Yes, it's not the classic baritone voice that we have grown to love from Hearn, et al. but his Sweeney is a lot darker and I think it fits it just fine. Just wait until you see it before passing final judgement. And don't go in all ready to hate it because it will ruin it for you. I am going tomorrow and I CAN'T WAIT!!!!

I will review this movie to within an inch of its life.....:) euterpe_81 December 21 2007, 00:57:05 UTC
I plan to give it a fair shake. I'm just pissed at Depp's attitude in this interview. I think that if it is NOT compared to any previous cast, then it will stand up very well on its own. But you're completely nuts if you think I'm not going to compare it. :) UGH, you bought the movie soundtrack?? WHY, when you could have Cariou/Lansbury/Garber/Lyndeck???

I wouldn't mind him not having a classical baritone voice if it weren't WRITTEN FOR A CLASSICAL BARITONE VOICE. But I'm seeing it Sunday afternoon, I'm actually quite excited to see it because again, I think it will be a great piece of cinema on its own. I just can't not compare it to the OBC, or the DVD.

I actually have the OBC recording, the revival, the Live Concert version on cd and dvd, and now the movie soundtrack. I like the Concert version the best with Hearn and LuPone. Here is something I think you might like: http://broadwayworld.com/viewcolumn.cfm?colid=23311

I"m a big huge fan of Hearn, although I think he over-acts a tiny bit. Cariou's voice is better and more pleasant to listen to, but Hearn has hysterical insanity down to an art. I have the DVD concert in my Netflix lineup...I think it's going to be a Sweeney weekend.

I haven't finished that article yet but it's pretty interesting. I suppose I can't say much since Sondheim approves this movie, but I just think I"ll always prefer the big voices from the stage.

I saw it today. It was REALLY good. I didn't LOVE it like I thought I was going to but I will def. be going back again eventually. LAWD, was it gory!!! My favorite was the kid playing Toby and yes, I'll say it . . . Johnny as Sweeney. Even though he doesn't have the best voice in the world, his acting TOTALLY made up for it. **two thumbs up**
