I had gotten
a picture of the blood moon eclipse last night on my cell phone from the backyard. The zoom only goes to 4x, so that was the best that I could do. There was
a great sped up version of the eclipse that I saw, which was fun. I was able to show Maddy both this morning. :)
Maddy's teacher sent home the list of questions to "go deeper" into reading stories, which I tried doing with her yesterday. When I swapped with Jason because he was getting fairly irate with Zachary not trying to work on his letters, he then got pretty irate with the questions. There were about a dozen of them, including some gems like the following: (paraphrased because the list is in her reading folder)
- What do you think will happen next in the story?
- Where in the text can you prove your ideas?
- What character do you connect with?
- What other books you've read can you connect with this one?
- What is the problem in the story?
- Where in the text can you see how they solve the problem?
- What do you think the author was trying to make you feel in the book?
- Why did the author write this book?
- Could this be a real story? Why or why not?
Jason got so irate, and the two of us wound up discussing our hate for the Common Core and how developmentally inappropriate all of this is for a six or seven year old. Man, no one we know likes this curriculum, though teachers always seem to defend it. Probably because they have to, tbh. Grrrr. Man, if I didn't have to work full time I'd honestly consider home schooling. There are so many more resources for things now than before, so I could probably do it. (I sound like a helicopter mom, don't I? I really try not to be...)
