(Also posted to Tumblr, since I have access to that at work...)

I'm almost hesitant to even put this here, but it bugs me and I haven't started my workday yet, so you get my prolly disjointed thoughts about a conversation I had with my hubby this morning. Mostly because it brought to mind meinterrupted and her "seething ball of feminist rage" tag. I don't want ( Read more... )

I have the same kind of issues with my husband. It's very disheartening when he just won't listen to my points, and has immediate (white male-privileged) comebacks that he thinks negate the issues.
Stay strong!

It's not the first time we've had this discussion (or others) where our opinions are not the same. He listens, but I don't think he hears the point. I do keep trying, though. It's part of the fun (sort of) that even after all this time together we can still learn new things about each other. :)

Ah, well. Life would be boring if all of our opinions were the same.

Yep. And our ideas gel in plenty of other places, so it's not like we have discussions like this all the time. It tends to be mostly about social constructs, gender/sexuality and politics.

Read some of Gail Simone's work. Especially the pre NU 52 reboot issues if Birds of prey. That's proof enough that females can carry complex stories and have male villains. (Oracle was paraplegic, didn't wear a skimpy costume, and completely rocked!). Point that out as a counter to some of his arguments.

Also read some positive comics blogs (comics should be good is a good one. Scans daily on dream width is also female friendly).

Ooh. Thanks for the rec! I never did get into comics very much before, so I'm only really starting to get into it with the fanfic I've been writing. :)

Gail Simone also did a fairly good run on Wonder Woman. She's got a very loyal following of female fans due to her writing. You might also check out work by Kelly Sue daconnic (sp?). I haven't read her work, but she's gotten quite a bit of buzz lately. The Stephanie brown run as batgirl was good, and the rebooted Barbara Gordon batgirl. Also Batwoman. Stay away from cat woman and red hood and the outlaws if you want to avoid rage-inducing things.

On the marvel side, I've heard good things about the Sif one-shot, and the last Journey into Mystery titles that focuses on her (before they were canceled).

I agee with you about the plus size definition. I wear a size 10 or 12 depending on the outfit and I'm a healthy weight with no health problems. I think it's important to represent all walks of life when you're such an important corporation like Disney.

And that's sad, considering that size 12 used to be the national average. I have a friend who really was size 0 before she had her babies, and is a 4 now. I'm one of those weirdos that actually wound up losing weight after each pregnancy, so I went from 18 to 12/14 to 10. We'll see what happens with this one, but I think I'm at a good weight now because I feel healthy and more active than before. Which is good, since I'd have to run after little kids. :D
