Catching up

Having Craig home has been such a relief. We had a belated Valentines on Friday, going into San Francisco to have dinner and see Sting in "The Last Ship," the musical Sting wrote a few years back. I was very excited about seeing Sting again - he's the only musician I ever saw live more than twice back when I was doing concerts - and he's held up well. The show itself left a bit to be desired, though. The story was a bit plodding, and I walked out convinced he'd written the show about the wrong people. It's about a UK village that finds itself unmoored when the corporation that owns the shipyard wants to break down the latest creation to sell for parts because it's too expensive to sell as is. The locals revolve around the shipyard and rebel, but it never really took off for me. There's a romance between the pub owner and the sailor who left her behind when they were teenagers, and as amazing as the actress was who played the pub owner, I spent the whole show thinking she could so much better than the sop who wanted her back.

But it wasn't awful. Just not great. And it was still worth it to see Sting live (even though it was difficult to hear the differences in voices between him and all the stage-trained performers).

Then yesterday was Alex's first winter guard competition. The show this year is about suicide awareness, and frankly, it's slow and rather dull. But the kids wanted to do it, and the coach wants kids who are excited about what they're doing, so everybody is going along with it. On the plus side, they didn't come in last which has happened a lot over the past few years. They managed 6th out of 10, which is pretty darn good for them. And Alex is just thrilled that he finally has a uniform that he doesn't have to worry about the pants falling down in the middle of a show (because the pants are a bib overall style).

We've had company this weekend, as well. A friend from the UK who works with Craig. It's always lovely to see him. I got out of the house this morning while he and Craig were doing some work stuff, but I did something to my hip while I was shopping and I've been in agony ever since. So I'm about to go sit in a steaming hot bath and try not to focus on the fact that I feel like I'm 100, hobbling from room to room and taking the stairs one at a time.
