Oddly relaxing day in spite of another weird encounter with my manager. We've been getting a ton of new books in to build up the collection again since they stopped buying very much last year. A big chunk of those are kids books. Our new kids section is packed, so today, I was instructed to pull out all the books we got prior to November 2020 in ( Read more... )

Sounds like no one had a look at what was on the shelves before they ordered more books. Seems a bit of a waste of everyone’s time ....

We don't actually have very much control over what we get. Acquisitions (an entirely separate central staff) takes care of it for all the branches in the county (there are 22). But they slowed down to maybe 10-15% of their usual purchasing during our lockdown. It started picking up again in February when things improved, but it's gone insane in the past month as our governor has said we'll fully reopen in June.

On paper, the list of books I had to pull seemed like it would be enough. In reality, half of them were skinny graphic novels, getting replaced by chapter books 4x their size. Also, Acquisitions has gone nuts replenishing our kids non-fiction. In February, we were down to a dozen books on a single shelf. Now we have two 4-foot shelves filled, with more sitting on the cart waiting to go out. My manager annoys the crap out of me these days, but in getting all these books, she's not actually the one to blame.

Oh - that makes more sense. Mind you it still seems a bit odd not to know what’s in each library - do acquisitions not have access to a database of information for each library?

Sounds like it's still challenging, but at least she wasn't yelling at you. :)
