A day of gaming

It's been a good couple of days. Yesterday, we had a low-key day for Alicia's birthday, playing games and watching movies, and today, she's over at her boyfriend's house spending Valentine's with him while the rest of us stayed home and took it easy. Since this has always been our gaming convention's weekend and it's not going on this year, we played a couple games in lieu of attending - Resident Evil and Mariposas. We've had Resident Evil for a while, and it's just a fun, simple deck-building game, but Mariposas was new to us. Surprisingly, it turned out to be a lot of fun.

It's about migrating monarch butterflies, where you play over three seasons, spreading them over North America to meet random goals and then getting them back down to Mexico by the end of the fall in order to gain points. There was a lot more strategy involved than we expected, which means I inevitably lose, but it didn't take away from our enjoyment. What really impressed us was how well designed it is. The game instructions are concise, and the board pretty much tells you everything you need to know in case you forget. There's a lot of game packed into it, especially since there are enough goal cards to make each game different. Plus, while there is strategy and some planning involved, it's not really that difficult to learn or play which makes it good for a wide variety of players. If you like tabletop games, I definitely recommend it.
