What I'm Reading Wednesday
WHAT I FINISHED
I finished both the vampire anthology and Lover Enshrined this week. Thank god.
The other book I finished was Darkness Visible by William Styron. It's a tiny book, about Styron's fight with depression in the mid 80s. I can relate to the subject matter quite a bit, but, in spite of hoping of finding some new insight or commiseration with the book, it left me cold. I've read Styron before, but his overintellectualized voice distanced me from this too much. Also, I couldn't help but feel that it was too easy for him in the end. He got hospitalized and discovered that the high dosage of his medication had a significant risk at drastically increasing suicidal ideation. Within days of getting taken off it, he started feeling better. And then it ended. Very disappointing. At least it was short.
DID NOT FINISH
I gave up on the historical romance I was reading. It was boring, and the hero kept saying he was reformed but I never believed it. Just a waste of time in the end.
I also started and gave up on Spilling Clarence by Anne Ursu. It's about a town that suddenly falls under the spell of a spilled drug that gives them the ability to remember everything from their lives. It sounded fascinating, but the author's voice was too grating for me to put up with for more than two chapters. She overdescribed everything. For example, there was an entire paragraph that was simply six different sentences/descriptions of how the town smelled to a woman with a sensitive nose. And everything was like that. It was like the author thought, why use one description when I can use at least four?
WHAT I'M READING
1. I decided I'm going to read that damn President Snow story, but I'm going to reread the series first. So I started The Hunger Games again this week. Damn, but I've forgotten how much I love Katniss and Peeta.
2. I'm two-thirds of the way through Blood Drive. While the plot is a little out there, the author has a very quick, readable style, and I don't hate the characters, so I'm sticking with it.
