What I'm Reading Wednesday
WHAT I FINISHED
I finished two books, the Joey Hill erotic romance (which was as I expected) and Spoonbenders by Daryl Gregory. Seriously, Gregory is swiftly moving up my list of favorite authors. I loved this flippin' book. It was funny and quirky and weird and moving without losing a lick of pace or plot. And then, hidden beneath all the humor and action, it talks about what family is and how it ties us together and how we find our place in it, as well as what it means to be gifted and how that's not always the "gift" we think it is. I highly recommend it.
WHAT I'M READING
1. Still working my way through the vampire anthology, Seize the Night. I read it on my break at work and the stories are stronger than most anthologies so there's a lot less skipping than I usually do with anthologies.
2. Also still working my way through Lover Enshrined. It's annoying. The primary hero is just so damaged, but the story is spending an inordinate amount of time on other male characters, getting them set up for their own novels. It's like the author didn't think there was enough story for Phury (and god, I hate the affectations of the names).
3. The Casanova Code by Donna MacMeans: A historical romance about a young woman who's good with codes/puzzles who conspires with her friends to "save" a rake's potential victims after he places an ad for female company. Historical romances, especially English ones, are hard sells for me. I find most of them pretty boring unless there's something different about them. This one is okay so far. Not outstanding, but the characters aren't quite as cookie cutter and vapid like I usually find in them. I'm sticking with it for now.
4. Blood Drive by Jeanne C. Stein: The second book in a series that I started almost eight years ago. I found this in my TBR pile when I did my reorganizing and put it closer to the top. I only just picked it up today. I have no memory of what the first book was like, so we'll see how this goes.
