Accommodation question: apartment vs. hotel/hostel

My partner and I are planning a trip to Berlin in the Spring, and we're currently considering our accommodation options. We like the idea of renting an apartment, but neither of us has done it before--our previous travel experiences have always involved staying in hotels, hostels, or B&Bs. Do any of you have experiences with staying in apartments while traveling? I'd love to hear about them, whether they're positive or negative. What are some of the pros and cons for apartments compared to other forms of accommodation? Information specific to Berlin is great, but I'd be happy to hear about experiences in other cities as well.
