Hello! I will be studying abroad in England for about a month this summer and I leave in less than 2 weeks! I am booking accommodations super last minute. I want to spend one weekend in Paris, one in London, one in Dublin and Cardiff, and one somewhere in Scotland. I'll probably be doing most of these trips by myself. Don't forget that if you're going to Edinburgh you want to avoid the Festival season, when prices skyrocket and availability plummets.

If you really want dramatic scenery, then getting further up into the highlands might be a good option. The train journey north of Glasgow is often very attractive (depending on weather), and Oban's a cute enough town. Alternatively, on to Glenfinnan via the 'harry potter' train! http://www.westcoastrailways.co.uk/jacobite/Jacobite_Details.html

Finally: there's this little event called the Olympics happening in London this summer, and it is screwing up the transport in an epic fashion. For that you really DO need to plan, especially if you're commuting in from Cambridge which is a fairly busy line at the best of times - and most of the trips you're intending to take will probably be fastest and easiest via London. So, yeah, I'd book as far in advance as possible.

Thanks so much for the advice! I didn't know about the Festival season, so that helps a lot. Ack, I keep forgetting about the Olympics! Haha but that's a great point, I'll start booking everything now, thank you!
