Last spring my husband and I were on a flight from San Francisco to London. He picked up the in-flight magazine which had an article about food in Turkey with many colorful photos. "Look! Look at what they're eating! Kebabs! Lamb! Eggplant! We should go to Turkey!"
*Fast forward to now*
So now we're actually thinking about going to Turkey.
I've traveled *moderately* extensively throughout western Europe. My husband has made three or four trips with me as tour guide. Going to Turkey will be a totally new experience for both of us. He's a bit more anxious than I am about some of the things we might run into...
For those who've visited Turkey, please let me know about your experiences - what you liked, what you didn't like, what was unexpected, recommendations...
Flying into Turkey - transportation from the airport? Best method? And if you flew on Turkish Airlines, what was your experience? I've read both good and bad accounts about in-flight service.
Best method of getting around in Istanbul? I know it's quite a large area - we're accustomed to walking but what's the public transportation like?
What about day trips from Istanbul - any places you'd recommend? Places you wouldn't go back?
And the two things my husband is most concerned about: food safety and toilets. I assured him that people eat every day over there and don't get sick, but he's still concerned. And he's really, really hoping he can avoid the Turkish toilets, but you know - when in Rome and all that. Still. Any words of wisdom?
Thanks for advice!
