First of all, good for you for planning a solo trip to Europe when you have family and friends who are trying to talk you out of it. You know this is what you want to do, and you are doing it! Go you!

Second of all, I have an incredibly bad sense of direction. Seriously, my friends tell epic tales of the wrong turns I have made trying to get somewhere. But I have still managed to find my way around European cities, and I have always been able to find the place where I am staying. A great thing about European public transportation is that it takes a lot of the guesswork out of getting around. A lot of your navigation won't be "go west, then go north, take this turn, take that turn," but rather "I'm at this subway stop, and I need to get to this subway stop. Oh look, here's a subway map!" It's very easy. Hostels are also very good at giving out directions for how to get to them. Print the directions out and take them with you, and you'll be fine. If you want to feel extra safe about it, carry enough cash on you to take a taxi just in case you find yourself wandering around the rain gutters (although a phone call to the hostel will also work).

Wear a money belt, use your common sense, and trust your spirit of adventure (which you obviously have or you wouldn't be doing this at all). I think you're going to have a fantastic time!
