INGLEWOOD - A 16-year-old alleged gang member was charged today with murdering an 18-year-old girl who was shot to death in Inglewood on July 22, the District Attorney’s office announced.
The minor, whose name was not announced because of his age, is expected to appear for arraignment tomorrow in Inglewood Juvenile Court. The minor (dob 3-11-1989) is charged in case No. YJ27163 with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder.
The petition alleged that the crimes were for the benefit of a criminal street gang and the minor used a handgun to commit the crimes. It also charged one count each of possession of a revolver and possession of live ammunition.
The court was asked to declare the minor unfit to be tried as a juvenile. If found to be unfit, the minor will be charged as an adult and tried in Superior Court.
Brittany Veal, 18, was shot and killed shortly before 10:30 p.m. on July 22 near 118th Place and Lemoli Avenue in Inglewood. Her 19-year-old companion was shot and wounded, but will survive.
Authorities said the young woman recently graduated from high school and was to start college this fall.
The minor, who is from Inglewood, remains in juvenile custody. He was arrested on Friday, seven days after the shooting.
Deputy District Attorney Anthony Falangetti of the Hardcore Gang Division will prosecute the case.
