I took a leisurely 3 hour train ride back to Vienna today, checked in at the hotel at the airport, then headed to Vienna to squeeze in one last Michelin star for the trip.
I went to Walter Bauer Restaurant, a small intimate place with vaulted ceilings. I ordered the prix-fixe menu with wine pairings, which was superb. After a Spanish Cava sparkling wine, I started with a tuna tartar with couscous, tomato chutney, wasabi ice cream, and salad. The wine pairing was a Moskatelle, very light and refreshing. Next was a grilled seabass filet with eggplant mousse puree and cherry tomato with pesto. This was paired with a Gruner Veltliner. After that came a risotto with langoustine tails, paired with a dry riesling. Then on to the main course, veal medallions with sauteed mushrooms and bok choy, with an amazing Heileboden, a blend of blaufrankisch, zweigelt, and cabernet. I must remember this one. For dessert I had a panna cotta with peaches, and a Beerenauslese.
I have an obscenely early flight tomorrow, at 7 am to London, then I have to hurry to Heathrow to make a 1 pm flight to Atlanta. Wish me luck.
