First Day in Vienna

After last night's entry I went to the gay dance club here, Why Not? That is the name of the club by the way. And also a good question. Although it is on two levels, it is actually pretty small. The dance floor was in the basement, and as I walked in they were playing "Be My Baby". I thought it was gonna be a long night. Or a short night, whichever way you look at it. Then came "Living on a Prayer" or whatever it is called. All night the mix was pretty mixed up, crossing styles, decades, and generations. Fortunately most of the rest of the night they played a lot of 80's, starting with Madonna "Like a Prayer", including Whitney Houston "I Want to Dance With Somebody", Pet Shop Boys "Go West, Pointer Sisters "Jump" which reminded me of Glasgow, Michael Jackson "Billy Jean", Cyndi Lauper "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and to my delight David Bowie "Let's Dance". It was pretty crowded, and the crowd was also pretty mixed. See what it is like tonight.

Today I started touring Vienna. It is such a beautiful city, and is overwhelming with all there is to do. I started at Stephansdom, the huge gothic cathedral that is the central focal point of the city. Then I stopped by the small museum of some Roman ruins, of course this was originally a Roman city, Vindobona. I walked around quite a bit, saw the Hofburg, the Hapsburg residence. It was fittingly impressive for a family that reigned as Emperors for 800 years. I stopped in the Art History Museum and the Leopold Museum. I went to the Karlskirche, a Baroque church that is being renovated. I went up a scary scaffolding elevator to see the frescoes in the dome up close, then climbed stairs to the cupola. Did I mention I am afraid of heights? After I came back to Earth I went to the Liechtenstein Palace, which is another art museum owned by the rulers of, yes, Liechtenstein.

I really feel shortchanged by the waste of yesterday. Of course this means I will have to come back. Tomorrow I wil try to see as much as I can, for I leave on Monday for Bratislava.
