Today started out kind of overcast, but it quickly cleared up as we took a half-hour ferry ride to the sacred island of Delos, near Mykonos. This is the mythological birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. Zeus turned a mortal woman, Leto, into a swan, and seduced her. Their children were born in a lake. The lake, ringed by a low stone wall and now intermittently dry with a palm tree in it, is surrounded by the ruins of a whole complex of temples, houses, and such. At one point the ancient city housed 30,000 people. The island is uninhabited today. It was so poetic, the ruins on the shore, columns and remnants of mosaics, walls, and statues appearing and waiting to be discovered. The site is huge, and I didn't have time to explore everything so I will have to return someday.
