The Gates

A sample from the Gates essay I had to write for sculpture:

"Central Park was an ideal location for the Gates. First of all I believe so because I think Jean-Claude’s choice is trustworthy (for he put two decades into preparing it: a good location was essential). I also think that both the aesthetic and philosophical ideas behind the gates fit well into the Central Park environs. Aesthetically speaking, the orange mixes comfortably with the surrounding greens of the turf and trees without much spectral bickering. It also is a literal complement to blue (the two mix to get brown) of the sky. The gates’ shape resembles a towering skyscraper, while the fabric gives them an organic and constantly changing silhouette that alters overtime, just like the seasonal changes of the nature around them. Philosophically, the gates help frame the landscape of Central Park that we New Yorkers find mundane. The Gates stand not only as works of art in their own rite, but they bring to attention the scenery of a New Yorker’s home. It helps us look at it in new ways and notice things about it we may not have noticed earlier. The fact that they’re up for only about two weeks accentuates this. It makes us look at the fleeting moments in life surrounding us, so that we can internalize it and analyze it like artists. The park changes with the seasons; leaves appear and disappear, snow comes and goes; and so will the gates soon be just a memory, having vanished from the radiant vistas of Central Park as swiftly as they appeared."

THE COOPER UNION HOMETEST IS FINALLY COMPLETE!
Let's just hope it's good enough... agh. I can always go to RISD. Eliana don't say anything.
