Purchasing power.

Caution: This post contains made-up words.

I'm thinking that one of the signs of being an adult is the exercised ability to resist buying something just because it's better than what you have, and it's on sale or going out of stock.

Today I realized for $65 I could have a MUCH MORE POWERFUL and LONGER RANGE and BETTER WIDGETED and MORE RAM'D and POINTIER ANTENNA...ED network deployment solution! Zow! Phreoww! Biff! Batman'd! AND AND! It's going out of stock! Lawsuit! Patent abuse! Last chance for awesome! Best in the history! Get now!

Today I managed to avoid spending $65 by asking myself:

1. Is my existing wireless solution really not pointy enough?
2. Would extending the range of said solution buy me anything other than the ability to send messages calling for help over 802.11 instead of EDGE if I'm captured by the ninjas next door and held for ransom in their attic?
3. Is "better" necessary when the current level of capability qualifies as "more than sufficient"?

I'm not convinced that I've saved $65 in the long run. What I've likely done is convinced myself that $130 or $200 is the least I can spend to get a network pointy enough or betterly RAM'D to the point where I would see real-life benefits aside from warm inner geek fuzzies. It's comforting to hope so, but we'll see.

For today, however, I have donut money.
