Chapter Three Chemistry Partners
It was the third week of school. The days were longer as summer was almost at its end. The most dreaded day came around-Monday. The school bell hadn’t wrung yet, and the time was nearing seven-thirty. Students were lazily walking up to the building, two of which were Kyuhyun and Ryeowook.
“Wait up, silly,” called Kyuhyun as he jogged up to his best friend. His uniform was slightly baggy, and his hair was brushed perfectly.
“I can’t wait until summer,” complained Ryeo. His braces were completely visible, and he held his book sack in an uncaring fashion.
Kyuhyun laughed loudly, “summer just ended.”
“I know, I’m just dreading this school year for some reason.” Ryeo stopped and sat on a bench that was in total direction of the sun. The younger boy shielded his eyes from the piercing light.
“At least we’re not freshmen’s anymore.” said Kyuhyun as he patted Ryeo on the back. “Just think of it this way, we won’t get picked on so badly this year,” he sort of laughed as he knew his friends reputation was already in the trash can.
“Ugh, here come the pep squad,” said Ryeowook as he noticed a handful of juniors and seniors walk up. The lot of them were guys. Kyuhyun fell somewhat shy as he noticed one in particular. He was tall. His hair was always kept short, and his school sweatshirt was tightly wrapped around his waist. He was known as the most popular guy in school, well, at least to Kyuhyun he was. Untouchable was he. The sophomore knew that he’d never get to know him, but some things were never impossible. His name was Siwon.
“They annoy me,” Ryeo said with a smug on his face.
Kyuhyun looked at him, “Don’t be so mean. They might not be the way you think they are,” his eyes caught sight of Siwon’s, and to his surprise he smiled at him. ‘He smiled at me, why would he smile at me?’ he thought. Ryeo was too busy messing with his cell phone to even notice the reddened faced Kyuhyun.
“C’mon,” he said as he stood. “We’ll be late,” Kyuhyun had tugged on his shirt making him leap to his feet.
Soon after, the bell had wrung. Everyone was getting seated in their classrooms, and people started to settle down rather quickly. Kyuhyun, who sat behind a fairly large boy, took out his math book. Looking around the room, he saw a group of girls staring at him and giggling. It made him feel uncomfortable, and he tried his best to ignore them.
The teacher began his rants on linear equations. Algebra wasn’t Kyuhyun favorite class, and all he looked forwards to was lunch and break. As his teacher wrote down problems they were to do on the board, Kyuhyun tried his best to get the chubby boy’s attention.
“Shindong,” he whispered harshly. The boy’s head seemed to be buried in his book, “Shindong,” he still didn’t stir. In a desperate act for his attention, he picked up his eraser, and he threw it at him. The chubby boy looked back with a scowl on his face as he thought someone was picking on him.
“I need help,” Kyuhyun’s voice was still whispery.
Shindong pushed up his glasses, and said to him, “I can’t right now, you’ll have to do it yourself,”
The teacher then turned around, “Quiet,” he said sharply. Shindong faced the front again, but Kyuhyun didn’t take no for an answer.
“I just need to know if you got the answers already,” he leaned forwards.
“Hold on,” Shindong snapped. He soon gave him a piece of paper with the first three answers on them with the way to work them. If Kyuhyun didn’t have Shindong, he wouldn’t know what to do in this class.
There soon came the sweet sound of the bell. Everyone at once shot to their feet, and as they made their way towards the door, Kyuhyun caught up with his friend.
“You really saved me back there,” he giggled; clinching his book sack.
“You know, you really need to learn how to do those problems yourself. What are you going to do when you go to take tests? I’m not going to help you out anymore if we get caught.” He protests.
Kyuhyun, who never worried said, “We will never get caught. That’s the fun part about this,”
Shindong thought of the idea as wrong and not good, “Yeah, well, I got to go. I’ll see you at lunch,” he waved and left.
Kyuhyun made his way to his locker, which was right next to Ryeo’s. The shorter boy came walking up. “I hate my English teacher,” he complained.
Kyuhyun giggled, “What happened?”
“He singled me out again in front of the entire class,” he said as he saved his English book, and took out his math-Kyuhyun did just the opposite.
“Well, maybe he thinks you’re good.”
Ryeo stopped and looked at him, “No I’m not. I was standing there not knowing what the hell to say-he fucking pisses me off.” He then closed his locker door, and leaned his back against it harshly. He was suddenly silent.
“Well, I hate math just as much,” Kyuhyun noticed that he was staring off into space, or at least, that’s what it seemed.
Ryeo then tapped him on his shoulder, “There she is,” he said as he stiffened.
Kyuhyun looked ahead and saw a girl standing across the hallway. Her hair was long, and she wore it up in a high pony tail. As she glossed her lips, and powdered her nose, Kyuhyun then told him “Go talk to her,”
Ryeo looked at him, “Are you crazy?” he said.
Kyu shrugged, “You like her right? Go talk with her.”
His friend shook his head, “Fine, I will,” he then left him, and Kyuhyun could do nothing but laugh as he watched his friend shyly talk with the girl of his dreams.
Third period finally came rolling around, and by now Kyuhyun’s stomach was roaring for food. Geography, another subject that bored him to death, was shared with a lot of students he didn’t know. Sitting in the first row and in the second seat, he had full view of the hallway. Luckily, his teacher kept the door opened, and to pass time, he’d watch anybody who’d walk passed.
There was a junior sitting in front of him. His hair was short, and he noticed that he always clung close to Siwon.
“Please name the longest river in the world?” their teacher said. Everybody raised their hands except for Kyuhyun.
“Mr. Cho,” said the round lady, “Will you please answer the question for me?”
He suddenly froze. He didn’t know what the longest river in the world was, how was he supposed to know? There was dead silence, and he stuttered profoundly. The boy in front of him then raised his arms up as he stretched. Clearing his throat he showed Kyuhyun a piece of paper that had the words ‘the Nile River’ written on it.
He then said it. The teacher smiled, and went on with the lesson. Kyuhyun couldn’t believe that that guy helped him. When class was over, he thanked him.
“No problem,” he smiled, and was then gone.
The cafeteria was filled students. Ryeo was talking his ear off about how his morning had been lousy, and all Kyuhyun could do to save himself from sheer boredom, was to stare off into space it seemed.
“You’re not even listening to me,” his friend complained.
“I am too,” Kyuhyun said.
“Then, what did I just get finished saying?” Ryeowook folded his arms.
Kyuhyun looked at him, “Fine, I wasn’t listening. You complain too much,”
When they sat down with their food, they were too busy eating to speak with each other. Shindong was busy asking other people for their food as he had already finished his plate.
“So I told my parents about the party this weekend.” Ryeowook said; his voice was a bit mono-toned.
“-and what did they say?” Kyu asked as he played with the leftover food that sat on his tray.
“They had the nerve to tell me that I couldn’t go,” he said loudly, “I’m 16 years old, I think I can go to late night parties.”
“My parents are letting me go,” Kyuhyun said holding his head high.
“Sweet fuckin awesome, now I get tell my mom that,” Ryeo’s hopes were suddenly lifted.
“There’s going to be alcohol at that party,” said Shindong as he butted his way into the conversation.
“Yeah, that’s why we’re going,” Kyuhyun grinned almost sarcastically.
“Whose house is it at?” the chubby boy asked.
“I think his name is Jungsu,” Ryeo said. “Or is it Siwon,”
Suddenly, it was like Kyuhyun’s stomach made a violent turn. He looked up at him. He knew where the party was being held, he just never thought that Siwon was gonna go-it never entered his mind for some strange reason. He then felt excited now.
“Sorry to change the subject, but lunch is over,” Shindong said as he stood. The rest of them followed soon after.
By 1:00, Kyuhyun had successfully earned himself a headache. He looked at his watch as he prayed for 3pm to come. His next class was chemistry, a class that Kyu was not so stupid in. He loved going because Siwon was also in the class.
Everyone was partnered with someone, but as luck would have it, Kyuhyun’s partner had recently changed schools and he’s been doing everything himself lately. As everyone settled, the teacher stood in front of the class. He then spoke loudly; “Is everyone here?” he looked around the classroom. “Good! Today we are going to study Stoichiometry, chemical reactions,” he held up his hands as he emphasized himself.
Suddenly, Siwon raised his hand-Kyuhyun saw from the corner of his eyes. The teacher then called on him, “My partner isn’t here today,” he said to him.
“Oh, well, partner up with Kyuhyun then,”
When the 15 year old heard this, his heart sank. He then looked over at Siwon who looked like he didn’t want to move as he got his things together. When he walked up to him, Kyuhyun moved his book sack down from the extra chair. He couldn’t even look him in the eye. He felt his body freeze as Siwon took his seat.
“Okay, open your books up to page 40,” the man smiled. As their teacher began their lesson, Kyuhyun noticed that Siwon was without a pencil.
“Here,” he softly smiled as he handed him one of his.
The older boy smiled gently at him as he said, “Thanks,”
Their teacher rambled on, yet for once Kyuhyun didn’t pay attention. All of his concentration was put into the boy that sat so close next to him. He nearly felt his face heat up, and he prayed that no one would notice.
“So, with your partners please do exercise three together,” the teacher said at once, and the moment was upon the younger boy.
He glanced shyly to his right and saw Siwon’s eyes stare down at his book. With no strength and confidence to offer team work attitude, Kyuhyun then began the assignment on his own. As he wrote down all the formulas, he noticed that the junior would glance at his notes. He smiled slightly and looked his way. He then slid his notebook closer to the jock who grinned.
“I don’t get any of this,” it was his first sentence he ever heard from him. He starred clueless at his chemistry book.
Kyuhyun was quick to say otherwise, “It’s actually really easy, look,” he then pointed his pen at the side notes of the chapter. “It’s pretty straight forewords; you just got to read and study the guidelines for the equations,”
Siwon looked down upon the page, but as his new found friend continued to explain, his eyes slowly veered towards him; but quickly he averted his sight when the younger boy glanced up at him.
Kyuhyun didn’t notice, but he smiled as he said, “If you need any help just ask,”
Siwon nodded, “Well, I’m on the verge of failing this class. I need at least a C to stay on the football team,”
It was a window of opportunity for the younger boy, and he felt as if he could scream, “I could help you get that C,” his mind fumbled, “Actually, I could help you get an A if you’re willing to work,” he joked a little. He saw the other boy nod.
“I’d really appreciate that,” he sweetly said as he smiled at him. Their eyes caught, until Kyuhyun shyly looked away. He felt gitty, but appeared reserved. He really couldn’t quite comprehend what was happening. Here was this boy who he had been following around in the shadows for a little over a year admiring his every move, and now he’s sitting next to him expecting him to tutor him. It was clearly a dream come true.
There was an awkward silence between them before the older boy said, “I hope you heard about the party this weekend,” he noticed Kyuhyun’s head pop up from the corner of his eye as he nervously toyed with his pencil.
Kyuhyun answered, “I did,” their eyes met again.
Siwon looked as though he was waiting on an answer. As he felt impatient, he then said, “Are you going?”
Kyuhyun shrugged, “I think I am. It depends,” he smirked.
Siwon grinned, “On what?”
Kyuhyun’s parents were quite strict on him, and even though he told his friends he was going he still hadn’t asked for their permission. Though he wasn’t about to tell Siwon that, so he unintentionally and flirtatiously said, “Whether you’re going,”
Siwon giggled suavely as he looked down at his book, “Of course I’m going.”
Kyuhyun had no reason to feel embarrassed. He liked him-he liked him a lot and he wanted him to know that. “Then, I’ll see you there,”
Suddenly, their teacher who had been slowly walking around the room pointed towards them as he said, “Guys, work,”
Exchanging smiles, the two boys began their assignment. Kyuhyun explained every step to Siwon who was slowly beginning to understand the lesson.
“I’m not making this too difficult for you, am I?” Kyuhyun geekishly smiled.
Siwon laughed, “No, not at all.” They continued their assignment together.
By the time the class had ended, most of the students were already out of the door. Kyuhyun’s backpack hung over his shoulder as he sluggishly walked towards his locker. He stopped suddenly when he heard his name being called.
“Kyuhyun,” called Siwon, and the younger and shorter boy turned. With a shy smile, the junior held up his pencil, “You forgot this,”
Kyuhyun shook his head, “You keep it. I’ve got plenty,” he smiled and was about to go on his way thinking that that was all Siwon needed.
“W-wait,” the older boy said.
Kyuhyun stopped once again and turned.
“Um, about the whole tutoring thing, can we start maybe tomorrow?”
Kyuhyun was curious, “Why not tonight?”
Siwon was quick to answer, “I have practice,”
“I’m free tomorrow after school. We could meet at the library,” he sweetly suggested.
Siwon nodded, “I’ll see you there,” he smiled at him before he went on his way.
Kyuhyun was left standing by his locker, and as he opened it he said to himself, “Oh my god, he is so hot,” with uncontrollable excitement stirring within his gut, he then went to his next period which was considered a reprieve from all his other subjects-P.E.
As he and a bunch of other students who changed their uniforms, rushed into the gym as they were all running late. From afar, Kyuhyun saw his best friend standing in the hurdle of boys while the girls were on the other side of the vast room.
“Hey,” Ryeowook said as he looked and sounded sleepy.
“Hey,” Kyu said with a sigh.
But Ryeowook was no fool. He noticed a difference in his friend, and he wondered why, “What’s with you?” he asked fervently.
The 15 year old smiled, “Nothing.” He didn’t want his friend to know about his liking of Siwon, but he felt compelled to talk to him. “I-uh, was partnered with Siwon today,” he began.
“That guy?” Ryeowook asked with some smidgen of annoyance to his face.
Kyuhyun noticed his attitude, but didn’t dwell on it, “Yeah, anyway, he seemed nice. You know, he seemed sweet actually,” he soon came to realize.
Ryeowook looked at him funny, “What’s with your sudden interest in this guy?” he sort of giggled.
Evidentially, Kyuhyun wasn’t as modest as he’d like to be, and soon coolly played down the situation, “Nothing, I just think he’s nice is all,”
His friend surprisingly agreed, “Yeah, I’ve talked with him before. He does seem pretty descent; quite unlike Heechul. Man, that dude is mean,”
Kyu looked curious, “Is he one of Siwon’s friends?” his attention was still on the jock.
“Yep,” nodded the other boy, “he never shuts up,”
“well, what about Jungsu? Have you ever talked with him?”
Ryeo shook his head, “Never have and I never will,”
They were then on opposing teams in the sport of basketball. Kyuhyun may have been skinny, but he was no girl in sports. He got his athletic genes from his dad. By the time physical education was over, school had finally come to an end.
Still in his P.E uniform, he and his friends walked towards the parking lot of the school. They waved at Shindong as he walked with his older sister towards her car.
“I’ll see you guys tomorrow,” said the chubby boy.
“Bye, Shindong,” Ryeowook yelled out. He then looked at Kyuhyun and noticed that he was walking further away, “What are you doing?”
The younger boy looked his way, “I think I’m gonna walk home today,”
“Are you sure?” his friend asked.
“Yeah, man, go home.” He giggled and started on his way.
The day was certainly gorgeous for a walk. It wasn’t too hot or cold. Kyuhyun held tightly to his book sack as he walked down the seemingly endless road. He lived about a five minute drive away, and he didn’t mind the walk. As he was in his own little world, he sensed a car pull up slowly behind him. As it cruised along side of him, he felt scared-until he saw who sat inside.
“Do you need ride?” asked Siwon as he smiled charmingly from within his vehicle.
Kyuhyun felt his heart ease of relief. He almost told him what he told Ryeowook, but he said otherwise, “Um, sure,” he then sat inside. The car smelt of smoke, and he noticed that Siwon listened to hip-hop. As he was buckling himself, he had a hard time.
“You have to press really hard. I’ve been meaning to get that fixed.” Siwon said to him, but noticed that Kyuhyun still had trouble.
“This thing won’t go in.”
Suddenly, Siwon stopped the car, and took over. Kyuhyun watched his strong arms handle the broken seat belt, and it just sent a wave of excitement throughout his body.
Siwon laughed as he sat right in his seat, “You sound just like my girlfriend,”
And the happy feeling was gone, “Oh, your girlfriend,”
They were a bit silent.
“Hey, is the music okay? Cause I can change it if you don’t like this,”
Kyuhyun smiled, “its fine,”
Siwon giggled slightly, “So, where do you live?”
Kyu pointed down the street they were on, “I live in that brick house right over there,”
“The two story one?”
“Yep,”
Siwon kept his speed slow as he wanted to talk with him more. “Um, thanks for helping me out in chemistry class today,” he glanced at him.
Kyuhyun shrugged, “It’s no big deal,”
“I-uh-want,” and he froze. “I forgot what I was going to say,” he laughed, “It’ll come to me,”
All the while, Kyuhyun gazed at every detail he could comprehend in his car. It told him a lot about his personality.
“Oh, um, your number; may I have your cell number,” he said with a nervous grin. He then stopped the car in front of his house.
Kyuhyun nodded; “Sure,” he then pulled out his phone and handed it to him.
“I’ll give you my number as well,”
Kyuhyun never took his eyes off of him as he did this. He wondered why all of a sudden he had an interest in him, or was it just because he offered to help him with school; he just couldn’t figure it out.
“There you go,” Siwon smiled as he handed his phone back to him. Their eyes met for the last time that day, “So, Kyuhyun,” pronounce his name clearly as if saying it would help him remember.
Kyuhyun just giggled.
Siwon then said, “I’ll see you tomorrow,”
“Thanks for driving me home,” Kyuhyun said as he unbuckled himself.
“No problem,” Siwon waved.
As soon as Kyuhyun closed the door, Siwon began to drive away. There was no one home, and as he unlocked the door he was then met by his dog-Paco. Patting his leg, he and his pet went upstairs. His room was lit up with sunlight as his window shined bright. His computer desk was right alongside his door, and his bed was just across from it.
His dog hopped on the soft mattress as did Kyuhyun. He starred endlessly out the window as his mind reflected on the previous day.
“I talked with him, Paco,” he said sweetly, “He’s too dreamy for words,” he then petted his dog as the furry animal laid by him. “I know you’ve heard me say this a billion times, but you’re just gonna have to hear it again. Siwon will be mine. I don’t care if he has a girlfriend right now. Nothing will stop me from having him.” he smiled uncontrollably as he picked up his sleepy dog. He laughed when it snarled. “Oh, be quiet. Can’t you see I’m in love?”
It was at least an hour or two before either of his parents returned home. Kyuhyun had all that time to himself thinking of no one but Siwon. He suddenly felt nervous about the coming day-how was he going to cope seeing and talking to him without making a complete fool of himself? He regained confidence, and soon met his parents down for dinner.
